Position Purpose

The Operator III/Lead maintains water/wastewater treatment, processing, disposal, and testing equipment in a water/wastewater treatment facility to meet permit and operational requirements. Fully qualified to perform complex functions and may lead others.

Primary Duties / Responsibilities

• Leads shift activities in operating automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment, including pumps, engines, generators, valves, gates, mixers, conveyors, blowers, chemical feed equipment, sludge processing equipment used to treat water to drinking water standards. Makes independent process control decisions. Directs other operators and trains them through on-the-job training.
• Monitors flow meters, gauges, flow ratios, pressures, and related controls via instrument panels, computer terminals, and PLC units.
• Records operating conditions and data in shift logs.
• Ensures conformance to process specifications, diagnoses operational problems, and takes corrective actions as per procedures. Reports malfunctions and variances to supervisors.
• Performs routine and preventative maintenance as assigned.
• Conducts field tests (chemical, physical, biological) to manage chemical dosages and process control. Samples sludge and solids for analysis.
• Monitors chemical supplies and adjusts orders to ensure continuous operation.
• Performs manual labor such as cleaning and maintenance of plant equipment and facilities.
• Operates vehicles for plant purposes.
• Practices good housekeeping and waste disposal according to safety and environmental policies.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; effective communication skills.
• Associate's degree in a science or technical field preferred.
• Over five years of related experience in water/wastewater treatment.

• Proficiency with PPE and safety equipment.
• Ability to operate all plant machinery and equipment efficiently.

• Computer proficiency for process control.

Certifications / Licenses / Training

• Water/wastewater treatment license as required by regulations.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Ability to pass drug and background checks.
• Respond to emergency calls and work extended hours as needed.
