Job summary

Goodwill Houston is looking for a Dock Worker 1 for the night shift to support the Donated Goods Program. You will process donations, operate material handling equipment, and help move goods to the loading dock while following safety policies.

Position Summary

Responsible for processing goods and emptying equipment for transportation flow according to GWH policy and ensuring the efficient and cost-effective operation and stewardship of the outlet store and donation center to maximize profitability for mission services funding.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate GWH’s Core Values in all actions.
  • Ensure adherence to Guiding Principles and CARF standards.
  • Ensure alignment and consistency of all aspects of the outlet store operations.
  • Operate assigned equipment safely in accordance with organizational and safety policies and procedures.
  • Process donated goods efficiently and effectively based on GWH’s needs and adapt to changes in commodities processing as assigned.
  • Bale merchandise, identify and demonstrate understanding of items that can be baled together or items that cannot be baled but should be processed separately.
  • Assist with quality control assurance.
  • Maintain accurate bale count with production equivalent to eight (8) to ten (10) bales per 8-hour shift, averaging over one (1) bale per hour.
  • Sort totes and process each tote with urgency when assigned.
  • Ensure that all products are constantly being rotated.
  • Assist in efficiently moving goods on the dock or production areas and when loading and unloading trucks with the aid of material handling equipment as needed.
  • Fill outlet boats with products and rotate them on and off the floor per the rotation schedule.
  • Sorts products into appropriate salvage, recycling, and trash based on current commodity expectations.
  • Operate assigned material handling equipment safely and prudently per the laws of the State of Texas and GWH safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain the processing area in a neat and clean condition.
  • Follow safe work procedures and personal protective equipment as required (e.g., lifting, proper equipment use, etc.) and report incidents and injuries immediately to a supervisor.
  • Follow the identified compliance standards and GWH guidelines for processing different commodities.
  • Report equipment, machinery, and other GWH property repairs and/or maintenance to a manager.
  • Complete required paperwork (e.g., logs, maintenance reports, etc.) accurately and in a timely manner, following policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative, functional work relationship with all associates.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to understand safety instructions, standard operating procedures, and workplace communications.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Ability to multitask, make quick decisions, and work in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.
  • Must have punctual and dependable attendance.
  • Free from alcohol and drugs.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for current or future employment. GWH does not offer visa sponsorship for employment purposes.

  • Outgoing Salvage Trailers
  • Work Integrity: Follows established procedures and processes donations timely with a sense of urgency.
  • Quality of Work: Attitude, sense of urgency, productivity, individual safety performance, etc.
  • Timely GWH LMS completion (training, etc.)
  • Safety Culture: zero (0) accidents or near misses
  • Attendance: Work schedule as assigned, notify leadership as needed, and no recurring issues.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Regular twisting, bending, squatting, kneeling, pushing, and pulling.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and, occasionally, lift/move items up to 100 lbs. (e.g., large bags of donations, televisions, furniture, etc.)
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Moderate indoor noise with periodic exposure to outside temperatures.
