Job summary

Albany Medical Center is seeking a Phlebotomist for the night shift to join the Phlebotomy Service. You will collect specimens, read prescriptions and requisitions, and ensure safe and accurate transport to the laboratory while delivering compassionate patient care.

The role requires phlebotomy experience, HS diploma, and BCLS/COVID-19 protocols as part of standard practice. Strong teamwork and communication with medical staff are essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/G.E.D. required.
• Formal Phlebotomy training or equivalent direct patient care training preferred.
• Some phlebotomy experience required.
• Minimum six months of direct patient care experience or enrolled in a healthcare program preferred.
• For outpatient services, pediatric experience, ability to transcribe orders, and experience in processing for transport of specimens to the laboratory preferred.
• Phlebotomy certification preferred; BCLS required on hire.

Responsibilities

• Collect specimens for clinical laboratory analysis in a safe and effective manner that meets patient care needs.
• Read and interpret documents such as prescriptions for blood work, requisitions, safety rules, and procedure manuals.
• Complete all technical and clinical procedures for which the phlebotomist has been trained.
• Provide care and services appropriate to the age and special characteristics of the patients served.
• Meet patient/family needs related to fears and stressors when delivering direct care.
• Provide age-specific information about pain relief to patients, family and/or significant others.
• Communicate effectively with nursing staff, physicians and other hospital departments.
• Assist with delivery of specimens to clinical laboratories safely and timely.
• Conduct inquiries to customers with courtesy, respect and confidentiality.
• Assess and communicate patients' pain management needs to the interdisciplinary team.
