Job summary

MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center is seeking a Lab Assistant to support laboratory departments by assisting staff in collection, processing, analysis, and reporting of tests essential for patient diagnosis. The position requires handling specimens securely, accurate labeling, LIS data entry, and adherence to safety and quality standards.

It is a full-time night shift with Mon-Thu 6pm-4:30am. High school diploma or GED required; laboratory experience and strong computer skills preferred;

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Performs venipunctures, finger sticks, and heel sticks as appropriate for patient age.
• Accepts specimens and requisitions from internal and external customers.
• Identifies patients and specimens using two identifiers and labels correctly.
• Registers and logs specimens in the LIS and documents workflow.
• Performs specimen processing and required documentation per protocols.
• Resolves problematic specimens and test orders with staff and clients.
• Follows safety, infection control, and chemical handling procedures.
• Operates LIS to support data entry and workflow management.
• Contributes to general lab operations and participates in committees/projects.
