General Job Summary:

The Cook is responsible for preparing meals for residents, according to applicable diet orders. The Cook will supervise meal service and direct delivery of trays with the help of Dietary Aides. The Cook is also responsible for maintaining sanitary conditions in the cooking area. Demonstrating leadership within the Food and Nutrition Department and embracing change with humility and integrity are essential. English speaking required.

Responsibilities include:
  1. Preparing food according to recipes and diet orders, adjusting for quantity or dietary needs with approved substitutes.
  2. Attractively preparing food, ensuring proper timing and temperature, and monitoring food temperatures.
  3. Staying updated on residents’ diet orders with help from CDM and Dietician.
  4. Checking incoming merchandise and overseeing storage.
  5. Planning use of leftovers.
  6. Monitoring sanitation levels of kitchen sinks.
  7. Restocking and rotating stock.
  8. Supervising meal service and tray delivery, checking for dietary accuracy.
  9. Keeping kitchen areas clean and organized, including refrigeration units and storerooms.
  10. Reporting broken equipment to FSM/CDM.
  11. Supervising Dietary Aides in the absence of FSM/CDM and reporting employee issues.
  12. Cleaning and sanitizing utensils and equipment during and after meal preparation.
  13. Performing Dietary Aide duties as needed.
  14. Training and orienting new staff.
  15. Cleaning floors after meals.
  16. Maintaining cleanliness of kitchen equipment.
  17. Emptying and sanitizing trash cans.
  18. Maintaining confidentiality of resident information.
  19. Adhering to personal grooming and dress code policies.
  20. Overseeing overall kitchen cleanliness during evening shifts.
  21. Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; coursework in quantity cooking required.
  • One year of quantity cooking or healthcare food service experience may substitute formal training.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions in English.
  • Successful completion of a Modified Diet course and Sanitation training required.
Continuous Education:
  • Attendance at scheduled in-service trainings and meetings is required.
  • All-staff meetings are mandatory.
Physical and Other Requirements:
  • Frequent lifting up to 10 pounds; occasional lifting between 10-25 pounds; infrequent over 25 pounds.
  • Carrying, standing, walking, bending, and twisting are regular activities.
  • Visual acuity of 20/20 and normal hearing (corrected) are required.
  • Respectful cooperation with staff and warm interaction with residents are essential.
