Job description

Tectonic is currently seeking a full-time Construction Inspector to work on an upcoming project in Montgomery County, NY!

This position offers a competitive salary and benefits package, and opportunities to work on challenging and exciting projects.

Essential Functions
  • Perform field inspections for roadway improvement projects conducted under a New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Highway Work Permit, including work such as traffic signalization, roadway widening (subbase and asphalt), sidewalks and curbing (concrete), signage, pavement striping, and related roadway improvements;
  • Monitor contractor activities and inspect work in progress to verify compliance with approved plans, permit requirements, and the NYSDOT Standard Specifications;
  • Prepare daily inspection reports and field documentation; communicate construction progress, deficiencies, and field issues to project managers, contractors, and client representatives;
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, traffic control plans, and project documentation to ensure work is performed in accordance with approved designs;
  • Verify proper implementation of maintenance and protection of traffic (MPT) and adherence to work zone safety requirements;
  • Perform related inspection and documentation duties as required to support the successful completion of assigned roadway improvement projects;
  • Follows project safety protocol;
  • All related duties as required to ensure the successful completion of assigned projects.
Qualifications
  • Candidates must possess at least one of the following AND a High School Diploma/equivalent:
    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent or Higher in Engineering;
    • Valid NICET Level II or Higher;
    • Any other suitable combination of education, training, or experience will be considered;
  • Experience with roadway construction inspection, preferably on projects performed under the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) or in accordance with the NYSDOT Standard Specifications, is strongly preferred;
  • Basic understanding and ability to interpret written specifications, plans, and construction documents for work orders and build documents;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with clients, supervisors, and inspectors regarding specifications and qualification test results;
  • Detail‑oriented, with capability to detect non‑conformities during testing procedures and complete detailed reports within a timely manner;
  • Valid, clean driver’s license and personal vehicle to travel to and within project sites, as regular daily travel is required.
Physical Requirements

While performing the essential functions of this position, it is frequently necessary to:

  • Assume a stationary position;
  • Handle, inspect, and/or feel documents, materials and/or equipment relevant to the job;
  • Communicate with colleagues, supervisors, and clients using Company email and telephone systems;
  • Move around on the job‑site, including ascending or descending on the landscape or on a ladder, and positioning oneself appropriately to access necessary testing materials and equipment, usually for prolonged periods of time;
  • Lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. for some types of monitoring and inspections;
  • Good visual skills, including focused depth perception, and
  • Regular daily operations of a motor‑vehicle, which may require remaining stationary for extended periods of time.

Employees may also be required to undergo substance abuse testing in accordance with project requirements, US DOT Regulations, and/or Company policy. The employee may occasionally be required to operate a computer, as well as other related office machinery, such as calculators, printers, and copy machines. The physical demands described above are representative of those necessary to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The offered pay may be outside of the provided salary range based upon the selected candidate’s work location, experience, education, certifications, and capabilities compared to the advertised position.
