Job summary

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) seeks two Open Rank Scientists to support the ngVLA software design and development. Primary work is 75% functional development for ngVLA IPT with 25% for independent research, focusing on detailed software requirements and calibration workflows.

Preferred duty station is NRAO Headquarters on UVA Grounds in Charlottesville, VA; travel to other NRAO sites may occur. Requires PhD and strong radio astronomy background.

Qualifications

• PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics or related field; 3+ years post-PhD preferred.
• Experience in radio astronomy data reduction and analysis, software development, and/or commissioning.
• Proven record of independent research.
• Expertise in interferometric radio/millimeter/submillimeter astronomy.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain detailed software requirements for ngVLA Computing and Software IPT.
• Support development of calibration and operation workflows.
• Prototype operations processes and workflows.
• Carry out independent astronomical research.
