Position Overview
The NPD (New Product Development) Manufacturing Engineer ensures success during the prototyping and manufacturing of new products within the Engineering department. They are responsible for generating and procuring tooling, developing & optimizing product assembly processes and their documentation, and supporting assembly obstacles which occur during new product development. They participate in efforts or events focused on improving manufacturing processes for new products and existing products at the company’s manufacturing locations and partner suppliers. They take direction from the Engineering Manager and can manage the day-to-day work on their own.
Essential Job Functions
- Develop, maintain, and finalize process instructions to establish sequence of operations used for the manufacture and assembly of new products being developed.
- Review engineering designs and drawings and recommend changes that provide for improved DfM (Design for Manufacturability) and DfA (Design for Assembly).
- Identify and resolve project risks (safety, quality, and/or schedule) involved in new product development projects.
- Design, draft, and procure tooling or fixturing used during manufacturing and assembly.
- Actively participate in project meetings to address and resolve manufacturing related items.
- Identify and address manufacturing related customer flow down requirements to ensure development expectations are met.
- Examples include but are not limited to developing control plans, PFMEA risk assessment, and specialized training or handling of hardware and/or equipment.
- Participate in hands on troubleshooting activities, cost-reduction activities, component evaluations, and other design and manufacturing initiatives to support continuous improvement, especially focused on manufacturing and assembly of products.
- Collaborate with other engineers and the test organization to define the testing requirements that align with customer specifications.
- Support Operations team to investigate and recommend resolution of production problems and works with Operations to implement changes.
- Ability to work individually or as part of a team.
- Communicate and collaborate with other cross-functional team members, suppliers, and contractors.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED Experience
- S. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Electrical Engineering (with manufacturing focus) or equivalent experience is required.
- 3 years of industry experience in rotating equipment, preferably electric motors with a strong emphasis in the manufacturing processes including but not limited to work instructions, methods, and tools.
- Familiar with SolidWorks and experience doing detailed SolidWorks CAD design of tooling and fixtures is preferred.
- Experience in Aerospace or Military Industry is a plus.
- Familiarity with AS9100 or ISO9001 quality standards, or equivalent.
- Self-motivated attitude with the ability to multitask and thrive in a timeline-driven environment.
- Good problem-solving skills and accountability to drive issues to closure.
- Demonstrated desire for learning and applying a continuous improvement approach.
- Understanding quality requirements and how an assembly is inspected based on detailed drawing specifications/tolerances.
- Experience using Microsoft Office tools.
- This position requires domestic and possibly international travel up to 20 percent.
