Job summary

Mercy Hospital St. Louis seeks a Critical Care Stepdown Registered Nurse (RN) to support intermediate‑acuity patients moving from ICU to Med/Surg. You will deliver evidence‑based care with a focus on safety, with strong collaboration among physicians, APPs, and the care team.

You will participate in huddles and quality initiatives, administer medications, monitor complex conditions, and pursue Mercy’s professional growth pathways with tuition support and robust benefits.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (ADN, Diploma, or BSN).
  • BSN preferred.
  • Missouri RN license or compact license.
  • BLS certification required; ACLS/ NIHSS/ PCCN preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high‑quality care for intermediate‑acuity patients transitioning from critical care to Med/Surg.
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care using evidence‑based practices.
  • Perform accurate hand‑offs and bedside shift reporting to maintain patient safety.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practitioners, and multidisciplinary partners to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Administer medications, monitor complex conditions (cardiac, respiratory, post‑ICU), and support recovery.
  • Participate in huddles, shared governance activities, and unit‑based quality improvement initiatives.

What You’ll Do

  • Education Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (ADN, Diploma, or BSN).
  • BSN preferred.
  • Licensure Current Missouri RN license or compact license.
  • Certifications Required: BLS (American Heart Association). Preferred: ACLS, NIHSS, PCCN, or other Stepdown‑related certifications.

Transforming the Health of Our Communities

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 195 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who was determined to help women and children in Dublin experiencing poverty. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill that dream. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, one of the first religious orders whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. In 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. In 1856, they traveled to St. Louis. In the years to come, they would establish hospitals throughout the Midwest. Many of these would join together in 1986 as Mercy.
