The Transition to Practice Nurse Residency Program is designed to extend the basic education and skills of graduate nurses and support their transition to a professional nurse over a 12-month program. The residency emphasizes a culture of professional growth and learning, preparing nurse residents to be future healthcare leaders in our community by providing necessary tools, training, and support.
- Proven, evidence-based 12-month program with full-time commitment.
- Standardized orientation including organizational onboarding, skill acquisition, and medical-surgical rotation.
- Skill acquisition rotations to build confidence and foundational knowledge prior to patient care responsibilities.
- Paired with trained preceptors for integration into the professional nursing culture.
- Provide direct patient care in an acute setting while fostering a safe and supportive learning environment.
- Support from experienced mentors, educators, and leadership.
- Enhance prioritization, organizational skills, and self-confidence in patient assessments and interventions.
- Participate in professional development sessions focused on clinical judgment and growth, with facilitated debriefings.
- Develop an evidence-based project to support ongoing learning and professional development.
- Adhere to Central Maine Healthcare standards, mission, vision, and values.
- Follow nursing guidelines, policies, procedures, and state regulations.
- Provide patient- and family-centered care emphasizing dignity and respect.
- Communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
- Attend all mandatory professional development sessions during the residency.
Essential Duties:
- Provide direct and indirect patient care, utilizing time management skills.
- Obtain nursing histories, perform assessments, and develop care plans.
- Administer medications correctly, considering patient age and condition.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity.
- Address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and spiritual needs.
- Act as liaison among administration, patients, physicians, and other providers.
- Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development for age-appropriate care.
- Collaborate with health team members for interdisciplinary care.
- Ensure documentation meets standards and policies.
- Operate equipment safely and correctly.
- Coordinate and supervise care as needed.
- Maintain flexibility and organization under stress.
- Create a safe, comfortable, therapeutic environment.
- Engage in ongoing professional growth through education and literature.
- Complete competency-based orientation.
- Educate and advocate for patients and families to promote understanding and resource utilization.

Education and Experience:
- Recent graduate from an accredited ADN or BSN program with less than 1 year of experience.
- Active or eligible for Maine State nursing licensure.
- Active BLS certification.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Engage patients and team members following CMH Experience Standards.
- Ability to direct and triage in dynamic environments.
- Collaborate with all levels of management and staff.
