Job summary

Beacon Health Options is seeking an EEG Technician to perform digital EEG studies (EEG, 24-hour EEG, video EEG) with strict adherence to protocol and patient safety. You will verify patient identity, explain procedures, check impedance, and ensure high-quality artifact-free data for physicians.

The role supports the Rehabilitation Services department, with responsibilities including documentation, data archiving, and on-call responsiveness for stat EEG orders.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. EEG experience preferred.
  • National EEG technician certification desired.
  • 1 year EEG and Evoked Potentials experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform EEG studies (including 24-hour and video EEG) with proper patient identification and explanations.
  • Ensure electrode impedance checks, calibration, and artifact-free studies per policy.
  • Document patient history and chart results for physician review.
  • Respond to stat EEGs promptly and manage on-call duties.
  • Edit and review 24-hour and video EEG data for clinician review.

Job description

Reports to the Director, Rehabilitation Services. Under general supervision, conducts EEG's and Evoked Potentials.

Performs (digital) electroencephalography studies (such as EEG, 24-hour EEG, and video EEG) using a variety of available equipment by:

  • Performing correct order identification.
  • Performing correct patient identification and explanation of the procedure.
  • Performing impedance check and machine calibration of all electrodes prior to study.
  • Performing correct patient explanation to ensure study is a high quality "artifact free" study.
  • Performing a study according to established departmental policy and protocol.
  • Performing study evaluation on an ongoing basis for adequate interpretation.
  • Documenting correct patient history, signs and symptoms for Physician after the completion of the test.
  • Responding to all stat EEG's as soon as possible when on call.
  • Completing daily departmental charge sheet.
  • Editing and reviewing 24 hour and video EEG's, including clipping of appropriate data for review by physician.
  • Archive and burn data to CDs for review by other facilities and for medical record purposes.

Performs Evoked Potential studies (such as BAER, Master ABR, and somatosensory evoked potential) using available equipment by:

  • Performing correct order identification.
  • Performing correct patient identification and explanation of the procedure.
  • Performing electrode set-up and assisting in monitoring surgical procedures.
  • Performing impedance check prior to study.
  • Performing correct patient explanation to ensure study is a high quality "artifact free" study.
  • Performing study according to established departmental policy and protocol.
  • Performing evaluation of study for adequate interpretation.
  • Placing all unconfirmed studies in proper location.
  • Responding to all stat orders as soon as possible; also, being available for call-in when assigned.
  • Completing daily departmental charge sheet.

Supports the Rehabilitation Department by:

  • Maintaining a clean, orderly and professional department at all times.
  • Maintaining all equipment used in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Promptly reporting equipment malfunctions to proper personnel.
  • Recommending replacement of equipment no longer safe and suitable for clinical use.
  • Performing inventory control as directed by supervisory personnel.
  • Cleaning, disinfecting and storing pertinent equipment, as necessary, for infection control.
  • Precepting new employees to the Department as directed.

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and experience in completing EEG's will be considered. One year of experience in completing EEG's and Evoked Potentials is preferred. National certification as an EEG Technician is desired.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrates mathematical skills necessary to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and work with ratios and percentages.
  • Demonstrates writing skills to accurately and legibly record patient medical history information, medical records and special services test results.
  • Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, families and staff members in a professional, courteous, friendly, sincere and understanding manner.
  • Requires fine motor skills for manipulation of highly technical equipment.
  • Demonstrates computer skills necessary to operate computer based digital testing equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Works in a patient care environment requiring physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities and possible exposure to biohazards.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
