Job summary

Duke University Hospital in Durham, NC is seeking a Health Unit Coordinator for the Neuro ICU to support patients, families, and staff. The role involves clerical work, EMR data entry, and coordination of patient transport and appointments.

Day shifts with a focus on accurate recordkeeping, communication, and collaboration in a high-paced hospital setting. Prior customer service and clerical experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; equivalent combination may be considered.
• Minimum of six (6) months of customer service experience.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and healthcare information systems.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a primary contact for patients, visitors, and staff.
• Answer calls, relay messages, and respond to patient requests.
• Manage patient records and upload information into the EMR.
• Navigate EMR systems to access patient data and schedule appointments.
• Coordinate patient transportation requests.
• Support unit operations including supplies, inventory, copying, filing and distribution.
• Maintain departmental records such as timekeeping and compliance reports.
• Assist with onboarding and clerical training for new staff.
• Schedule maintenance requests and generate reports as directed by leadership.
• Participate in process improvement initiatives and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Conduct patient rounds to introduce services and address questions or concerns.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
