Job summary

Orangeburg County is seeking a Network Administrator to manage and monitor local and wide area networks, servers, and related systems. You will install, upgrade, troubleshoot, and support a range of IT infrastructure and user needs.

The role requires an Associate’s Degree and 4+ years in network/server administration, with CompTIA Network+ and A+ certifications preferred. On-call and nightly backup rotation are part of the duties.

Qualifications

  • Requires an Associate’s Degree or specialized training equivalent to two years of college in network administration or related field.
  • Four years of experience in network and server administration or closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a resource on all aspects of the County's network systems and communication equipment; provides end-user support.
  • Responds to calls, email, and requests for technical support; documents and tracks issues to ensure timely resolution.
  • Supports phone system, mobile data, voicemail, email, and web server; installs and terminates network cabling as needed.
  • Installs new equipment and software upgrades; administers computer systems and usage.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves hardware, software, and network problems; monitors network status.

Job description

General Description

The purpose of this job is to perform network systems work involving the implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of the local and wide area networks, systems and a variety of technical duties in the installation, repair, replacement, peripherals, and telecommunications; troubleshoots and debugs software systems; assists with system upgrades, enhancements, and overhauls; and provides user support and training for end users.

This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Acts as a resource on all aspects of the County's network systems and communication equipment. Provide support to end users on a variety of issues.
  • Responds to telephone calls, email, and personnel requests for technical support; documents, tracks, and monitors the problem to ensure a timely resolution.
  • Supports the phone system, mobile data communications, voicemail system, email, web server, pull and terminate network cabling for voice, data, printers, and routers as needed.
  • Installs new equipment, systems, programs, and software upgrades; interfaces computers to peripheral equipment; administers computer systems, usage, and programs.
  • Evaluates, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and resolves computer hardware, software, network, related equipment, and communication connectivity problems.
  • Monitors the status of the network to ensure that all devices are working properly.
  • Installs, tests, and maintains network hardware and software; analyzes network utility and availability.
  • Maintains network support software, analyzes user support statistics, and recommends appropriate measures.
  • Works nightly on-call and daily backup rotation once every 8 to 10 weeks as assigned.
  • Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires an Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in network administration, server administration or closely related field.

Requires four (4) years of experience in network and server administration, systems or closely related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Special Certifications and Licenses
  • Experience with Comptia Network and A+ preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license
Physical Demands

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all the time and involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
