Job summary

Comal Independent School District is seeking a Network Administrator to manage and operate the district’s wired and wireless networks, firewall, and related services. You will install, test, and oversee network security and services to support teaching and district operations.

The role requires experience with mission-critical networks, LAN/WAN design, Windows Server and Linux environments, and a proactive approach to security, reliability, and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Requires ability to concentrate and communicate effectively (written and verbal).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; two- or four-year degree preferred.
  • Certifications such as A+, Network+, Linux+, Security+, CCNA/CCNP/CCSP preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and resolve network hardware and software issues including maintenance and upgrades.
  • Plan, design, install, test, and document network equipment and implementations.
  • Maintain network security with firewalls and security software to monitor usage and prevent unauthorized access.
  • Develop and maintain the district data network per industry standards.
  • Use monitoring tools to identify congestion, threats and abnormalities and address them.
  • Assist in keeping an up-to-date network topology/design for troubleshooting and purchasing.
  • Assist in documenting network security standards and ensuring district data network resources are secure.
  • Maintain Internet filtering, spam blocking, and IPS/firewall signature databases.
  • Manage wireless networks including security and load balancing.
  • Monitor and document all UPS equipment and assist disaster recovery planning.

Job description

Primary Purpose

Administer and operate the district’s wired and wireless networks, firewall, and other network-based appliances. Responsible for the installation, testing, and oversight of all network hardware, software and equipment related to network security and services.

Special Knowledge / Skills
  • Ability to concentrate and communicate effectively (verbally and written).
Education / Certification

  • Certifications preferred
    • A+, Network+, Linux+, Security+, CCNA/CCNP, CCSP
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications as the board may find appropriate
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
Experience / Other Requirements
  • Minimum two years experience with mission-critical networks and servers
  • Minimum two years experience LAN/WAN design, implementation and maintenance
  • Experience in configuring layer 3 switching
  • Experience with managed and autonomous wireless environmentsExperience with Microsoft server OS’s, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, various Linux Distros
Experience – Preferred
  • K-12 education experience
  • Two-years experience in administration of physical and virtualized Windows and Linux servers, MS Active Directory and group policy management, automated identity management systems and SANs
Major Responsibilities And Duties
  • Identify and resolve network hardware and software issues including maintenance and software upgrades through analysis of the systems.
  • Plan, design, install, test, maintain and document network equipment and implementations.
  • Maintain network security with firewall(s) and software security to validate Internet usage of the district network and monitor unauthorized access attempts and violations.
  • Develop and maintain the district’s data network in accordance with industry standards, consulting with others when needed.
  • Use network monitoring and assessment software to identify, analyze, and address network congestion, security threats and other abnormalities.
  • Assist the supervisor in maintaining an effective security system designed to maximize stability of the network/workstations while minimizing the impact on instruction.
  • Assist the supervisor in maintaining an up-to-date network topology/design in order to quickly access information needed to diagnose problems and make purchases.
  • Assist in the design, development, modification, and documentation of network security standards and ensure, with best effort, that all district data network resources are secure.
  • Use network monitoring and assessment software to identify and address network congestion, security threats and other abnormalities.
  • Maintain Internet filtering, spam blocking, and IPS/firewall signature databases, consulting with others when needed.
  • Manage wireless networks including security and load balancing.
  • Monitor, plan, install, and document all network UPS equipment.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of a disaster recovery plan.
  • Stay abreast of up-to-date networking standards and technology upgrades.
Technical Support
  • Provide input in hardware and software specifications, planning, configuration, solutions and testing.
  • Troubleshoot, manage and document preventative maintenance schedule of network hardware.
  • Manage 3rd party MDR tools (Artic Wolf) with team
Safety
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and immediately report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor.
Communication and Community Relations
  • Promote departmental culture of exemplary customer service though frequent communication, positive relations and prompt support.
  • Maintain an effective and positive system of communication between central and building administration, office staff, technicians and campus technology specialists.
Policies, Reports, and Law
  • Maintain confidentiality with regard to information being processed, stored or accessed by the network.
  • Compile, maintain and file all documentation including physical and computerized reports, records and other required documents.
  • Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education regulations and local board policy.
  • Assist in the maintenance of an accurate inventory of all network equipment.
Other
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Recommend updates to the district’s Responsible Use Policy.
  • Maintain current knowledge of network hardware and software through ongoing training programs and professional certifications.
  • Cross train with team members to improve overall administration of systems and applications to ensure efficient and effective delivery of technology resources. 28. Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise Telecommunications Coordinator, Telecom Technician (s).

Equipment Used

Personal computer, network management tools, routers, switches, access points, UPS, cable assembly and testing equipment. General construction tools. Operate personal vehicles in the performance of assigned duties.

Working Conditions

Maintain emotional control under stress, hectic pace, and work with frequent interruptions. Repetitive hand motions; occasional strenuous walking, standing, bending, and climbing; occasional moderately heavy lifting and carrying; occasional prolonged and irregular work hours and frequent district wide travel. Working in office environment and with diverse community groups. Frequent work in industrial and classroom environment. Regular work in utility closets, cable chases, and above suspended ceilings. May be required to be on call after hours.
