Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Network Infrastructure Technician to support installation of cabling, fiber and network hardware for its campus networks in Blacksburg. The role emphasizes teamwork, communication, and safety as you install, test and document cabling and equipment used for teaching, research and administration.

The position requires physical work, a valid driver’s license, and basic tool knowledge; employment is non-exempt with potential overtime as needed.

Qualifications

Clear written and verbal communication with supervision.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to function in a team.
Valid driver's license with clean driving record and background check.
Able to climb ladders and kneel for extended periods.
Able to use handheld tools and test equipment.

Responsibilities

Assist with installation, repair and maintenance of voice, data and video systems.
Install, terminate, and splice multimode and single-mode fiber and copper cabling.
Activate services per work orders under detailed direction.
Assist with fusion splicing, termination and testing of optical fiber.
With supervision, install network hardware including wireless access points and switches.
Install Category 6 cable and terminate RJ-45 jacks; certify station cabling.
Maintain work order documentation and verify 911 information after work orders.
Participate in IT project management processes as a team member.
