Position: Essential Classification requiring on‑call 24x7 duty during emergencies or hurricanes.
The role manages and maintains the city’s networking infrastructure, ensuring secure, reliable, and efficient connectivity while supporting critical services through oversight of network performance and cybersecurity.
Position Details
Compensation: Up to $97,407.00/yr DOQ.
Hours: Full Time.
FLSA Status: Exempt, On‑call 24x7.
Bargaining Unit: None.
Schedule: Onsite weekday daytime shift; may require evenings, weekends, holidays, or other critical times in response to emergencies or at supervisor’s discretion.
Supervision Exercised: No supervision of staff; can lead and manage projects and resources when required.
Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the IT Director or designee with considerable independent judgment and initiative.
General Purpose
The purpose of the position is to manage and maintain the city’s networking infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and efficient connectivity, supporting critical services by overseeing network performance and cybersecurity.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Install and configure network servers, routers, switches, phone systems, CCTV systems, and equipment; repair and replace hardware components.
- Review release and patch level documentation and apply them to enterprise system and networking equipment.
- Monitor network devices, including vulnerability management, availability of services, and review system logs.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues.
- Collaborate with the networking team to recommend design and implementation of local and wide area networks.
- Monitor and maintain backup systems.
- Analyze user needs and implement cost‑efficient solutions.
- Create and maintain system documentation following standard change‑management procedures.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with team members, management, customers, and vendors.
- Develop and implement plans to improve the security posture of the network and end users.
- Promote courtesy and professionalism throughout the City of Bradenton.
Skills and Physical Abilities Required
- Thorough knowledge of all network components and protocols, including servers, virtualization, switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless access as they apply to the city’s network.
- Proficiency in backup and recovery best practices.
- Knowledge of security best practices and frameworks.
- Experience with fiber optic networks.
- Experience with IP phone systems.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Sound verbal and written communication, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions, demonstrate flexibility, and work with users at all organizational levels.
- Ability to present technical information in a non‑technical manner.
- Physical ability to move computer and related equipment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Computer Equipment and Software Requirements
Firewalls, switches, server virtualization, VLANs, VPNs, and certificate management, among other networking protocols. Experience troubleshooting complex network issues, VOIP telephony issues, and high‑level networking tasks.
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in technology or a related field with three or more years of experience working with enterprise‑level networks.
Preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in technology.
- Certifications such as Network+, CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent.
- Advanced practical experience and knowledge in networking, security frameworks, and communication protocols.
Other Considerations
- Good driving record and possession of a Florida Driver’s License required.
- FDLE/CJIS Requirement: Preference for previous FDLE or other security clearances. Requires certification by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for work with systems containing offender and criminal data, plus a comprehensive background check including a polygraph.
