Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient nephrology evaluation, consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.
  • Evaluate and manage AKI, CKD, ESRD, electrolyte and fluid disorders, hypertension, and nephrolithiasis.
  • Provide oversight and management of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and other kidney replacement therapies.
  • Evaluate and manage kidney transplant patients and patients with poisonings or intoxications involving renal care.
  • Perform procedures within granted privileges, which may include dialysis catheter placement and kidney biopsy.
  • Provide timely consultations and coordinate care with VA physicians, nurses, dialysis personnel, and other clinical services.
  • Complete accurate, timely medical-record documentation, orders, reports, and discharge instructions.
  • Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, dialysis, and follow-up care.
  • Participate in quality-management, patient-safety, peer-review, committee, and medical-staff activities as required.
  • Attend required meetings, orientations, training sessions, and clinical conferences.
  • Provide scheduled weeknight, weekend, and holiday on-call coverage and respond within required timeframes.
  • Follow all VA clinical, privacy, information-security, infection-control, safety, and workplace requirements.
  • Maintain all licenses, certificates, registrations, credentials, and privileges required for performance.

Must satisfy all VA suitability, credentialing, privileging, onboarding, identity-verification, training, and facility-access requirements applicable to the position.

Security Requirements

No classified clearance level is stated. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of VA background, suitability, PIV, privacy, security, credentialing, and system-access requirements.

1.0 FTE, with no more than one provider on-site daily.

Estimated Total Compensation

$137.85 per hour.

Working Hours

Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, excluding federal holidays, plus required evening, weekend, and holiday on-call coverage. On-call response requirements include a 15-minute telephone response and a 60-minute on-site callback response.

Work Arrangement

Clinical services are on-site at the Hershel Woody Williams VA Medical Center. Off-site telephone consultation occurs during on-call periods, with on-site callback when required.

Period of Performance

November 1, 2026 through October 31, 2031, if all option periods are exercised, with a possible extension of up to six months.

Summary of Services

The Nephrology Physician will provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient nephrology services at the Hershel Woody Williams VA Medical Center. The role includes direct patient care, dialysis oversight, consultation, procedures within granted privileges, documentation, quality activities, and on-call coverage.

Mandatory Qualifications

Must possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Nephrology through the American Board of Internal Medicine or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Must maintain current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification and all other certifications required for granted privileges.

Must maintain an active Drug Enforcement Administration registration and National Provider Identifier.

Must successfully complete VA credentialing and privileging before providing patient care.

Must demonstrate technical proficiency, professional competence, and English-language fluency appropriate for the assignment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Provide inpatient and outpatient nephrology evaluation, consultation, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care.

Evaluate and manage acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, end-stage kidney disease, electrolyte and fluid disorders, hypertension, and nephrolithiasis.

Provide oversight and management of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and other kidney replacement therapies.
