Job summary

The City of South Bend is seeking an Inspector to enforce property maintenance laws and perform inspections across city neighborhoods. You will utilize mobile devices to document violations, prepare reports, and support municipal safety initiatives.

Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma (or equivalent) and experience in building inspections or related fields; GIS/Accela experience is a plus. This full-time, non-exempt role requires independence, teamwork, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• College degree related to construction, building inspection, engineering, environmental health and safety, or criminal justice preferred.
• Three+ years of relevant work experience preferred, especially in building construction or inspection fields.
• Experience with standard office software (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel); GIS-based software and Accela a plus.

Responsibilities

• Perform property inspections following city processes and applicable standards.
• Enforce city and state laws regarding property maintenance and vehicles.
• Document violations and conditions using mobile devices and record-keeping tools.
• Complete accurate reports and maintain records and files.
• Track problem properties and respond to inspection requests.
• Educate residents and business owners about code issues and violations.
