Job summary

The City of South Bend is seeking an Inspector to enforce building, environmental, and zoning codes. You will inspect neighborhoods, document violations, and collaborate with other city departments to address unsafe living conditions.

Inspectors use mobile devices to record data, generate reports, and educate residents on code requirements. A valid driver's license is required; IMPC and asbestos certifications may be needed based on assignment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred in construction, building inspection, engineering, environmental health, safety, or criminal justice.
• Three or more years of work experience preferred, especially in building construction or inspection.
• Strong written and verbal communication; proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Responsibilities

• Perform property inspections according to city processes and state standards.
• Enforce city/state laws regarding property maintenance and vehicles.
• Use mobile apps to document violations, take photos, and track citation history.
• Prepare reports and maintain accurate records and files.
• Educate residents and businesses about code issues and violations.
