Job summary

MISTRAS Group, Inc. is seeking a Level II Ultrasonic Testing (UT) technician in Houston, TX to perform shear wave inspections on welds, plates, pipes, and vessels, documenting results per ASME/AWS/API/ASTM standards.

Responsibilities include calibration, reporting, and mentoring Level I technicians; travel to client sites as needed; reading drawings and maintaining QA records while upholding the company QMS and safety policies.

Qualifications

• Current Level II Ultrasonic Testing (UT) certification per ASNT SNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, NAVSEA, or CP-189.
• Demonstrated experience performing manual shear wave ultrasonic inspections.
• Thorough understanding of ultrasonic wave propagation and flaw characterization.
• Ability to read fabrication drawings and weld procedures.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform UT inspections using shear wave techniques on welds, plate, pipe, pressure vessels, and structures.
• Interpret inspection results per codes, standards, and customer specifications.
• Set up, calibrate, and operate UT equipment before and during inspections.
• Identify, size, characterize, and document discontinuities using shear wave methods.
• Complete accurate inspection reports, data sheets, and quality documentation.
• Verify equipment calibration and maintain calibration records.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, procedures, and technical specifications.
• Ensure inspections meet ASME, AWS, API, and ASTM requirements.
• Maintain compliance with QMS and safety policies.
• Coordinate findings with customers, supervisors, engineers, and quality personnel.
• Assist in developing inspection techniques and processes; mentor Level I technicians.

Description

Job Responsibilities:

• Set up, calibrate, standardize, and operate ultrasonic testing equipment before and during inspections.
• Identify, size, characterize, and document discontinuities using appropriate shear wave methods.
• Complete accurate inspection reports, data sheets, and quality documentation.
• Verify equipment calibration and maintain calibration records.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, procedures, and technical specifications.
• Ensure inspections are performed in accordance with ASME, AWS, API, ASTM, and customer requirements.
• Maintain compliance with company Quality Management System (QMS), safety policies, and industry regulations.
• Coordinate with customers, supervisors, engineers, and quality personnel regarding inspection findings.

• Mentor and provide guidance to Level I technicians as needed.
• Maintain certification records and participate in continuing education and annual proficiency requirements.
• Travel to customer facilities and job sites as required.

Requirements:

• Current Level II Ultrasonic Testing (UT) certification in accordance with ASNT SNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, NAVSEA, or CP-189.
• Demonstrated experience performing manual shear wave ultrasonic inspections.
• Thorough understanding of ultrasonic wave propagation, angle beam inspection techniques, DAC, AWS D1.1 acceptance criteria, and flaw characterization.
• Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld procedures, and inspection requirements.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and electronic reporting systems.
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel.

Preferred Requirements:

• Graduated from a Non-Destructive Testing School
• Additional NDT certifications (PT, VT, PAUT, RT) are a plus
• Experience in refinery, manufacturing, fabrication, aerospace, or industrial environments preferred
