Job summary

New Mexico Legal Aid seeks a Native American Program Staff Attorney in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM. The role focuses on providing civil/criminal services to Native communities, emphasizing tribal and Indian law, and working across NM offices with regular travel.

Active NM bar admission or ability to obtain within three months is required; bilingual abilities are a plus. The position operates under a collective bargaining agreement with a union-defined salary scale.

Qualifications

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience in working with diverse Native communities, preferably Pueblo.
• Admission to practice in New Mexico or ability to obtain licensure within three months.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal services from full representation to brief services, and/or advice and counsel.
• Provides criminal defense representation within NAP priorities.
• Serve as Guardian ad Litem as appointed.
• Participates in outreach activities and develops community education materials.
• Analyzes applicants' needs to highlight systemic solutions.
• Analyzes jurisdictional issues and due process under the Indian Civil Rights Act.
• Other duties as assigned.
