Job summary

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) seeks a Staff Attorney to join its Northern New Mexico team. The role focuses on Disaster Legal Services and a generalist civil practice for low-income residents of Santa Fe, Las Vegas, or Taos. The attorney will handle a caseload, provide representation, and contribute to outreach and training.

Hybrid schedule with in-office and remote work is expected. The position requires a JD, NM licensure or ability to obtain it within six months, strong communication skills,

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent.
• Licensed to practice law in New Mexico, or ability to become licensed within six months.
• Ability to manage an active caseload and multiple priorities effectively.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and manage an active caseload of disaster-related civil legal matters.
• Interview clients, identify disaster-related legal issues, and develop case strategies.
• Provide advice, brief services, and direct representation to disaster survivors.
• Conduct legal research, document preparation, negotiations, and representation as needed.
• Collaborate with Community Justice Workers and DLS staff to identify needs and connect clients to services.
• Develop and provide legal education materials and trainings for partners.
