Job summary

New Mexico Legal Aid seeks two Staff Attorneys for its Native American Program in Santa Ana Pueblo, NM. You will handle civil and criminal cases, provide direct representation and counsel, and engage with tribal communities statewide.

Ideal candidates bring strong tribal and Indian law knowledge, NM bar admission (or eligibility), and excellent communication. Travel across New Mexico is expected; bilingual abilities are a plus.

Qualifications

• Understanding of tribal law and federal/state Indian law relevant to NAP caseload.
• Experience in low-income Native communities preferred; Pueblo experience valued.
• Admission to practice in New Mexico within three months or eligible relocation.
• Excellent written and oral communication; ability to work in diverse teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide full representation, brief services, and advice to clients.
• Criminal defense representation within NAP priorities.
• Serve as Guardian ad Litem as appointed.
• Engage in outreach, education presentations, and pro se materials.
• Analyze applicants' needs for systemic solutions and jurisdictional issues.
