Job summary

War on the Rocks is seeking a detail-oriented managing editor to join our editorial team in the Washington, DC area. The role involves guiding the publication process for commentary pieces, editing for argument, clarity, and style, and managing workflows and deadlines.

Our contributors include military personnel, government officials, scholars, and defense industry members. The candidate should have deep national security policy exposure and strong English writing ability.

Qualifications

• Five years of editorial experience, demonstrated with substantive wordsmithing
• Five years of professional defense/foreign policy experience (excludes grad studies/internships)
• Exceptional attention to detail
• Passion for developing and maintaining organized editorial processes
• Ability to meet short deadlines while managing longer projects
• Excellent written English and precise editing
• Patience, rigor, and sound editorial judgment
• Ability to work collegially with authors and colleagues
• Flexibility to handle diverse responsibilities in a small team
• Right to work in the United States

Responsibilities

• Oversee publication and editorial process for commentary articles.
• Edit for argument, structure, clarity, and style.
• Manage editorial workflows and deadlines.
• Collaborate with editors, contributors, and the War on the Rocks team.
• Steward articles from submission through publication.
