Job summary

GFL Environmental Services Inc. (GESI) is expanding and seeks a National Director, Environment & Compliance in the USA to lead a team across regions and drive a robust environmental program.

Reporting to the VP, Environment and Compliance, you will build an effective management system, ensure regulatory compliance, and steer improvements in hazardous waste operations with a strategic, collaborative leadership approach.

Qualifications

• 12+ years in the hazardous waste industry.
• 7+ years in environmental/regulatory compliance.
• Post-secondary degree in a related field (e.g., Chemical/Environmental Engineering/Technology, Environmental Studies, Geography, Chemistry).
• Experience building and managing effective/goal-oriented teams.
• Strong understanding of the hazardous waste industry.
• Analytical and strategic thinking skills.
• Effective team building and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead each region in a standardized approach to tracking site-specific regulatory requirements and report progress.
• Oversee an internal environmental compliance auditing program and ensure processes are aligned country-wide.
• Review and prioritize priority site environmental issues and projects.
• Build and manage relationships with environmental regulatory bodies and stay abreast of regulatory changes.
• Expand permit application processes by identifying gaps and obtaining permits and licenses.
• Expand knowledge of environmental regulations through training and information sharing.
• Oversee collaboration with Operations and other support groups for effective teamwork.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

The Role

Reporting to the VP, Environment and Compliance this position will lead a team of regional Managers to meet the goals of an environmental management system that is based on limiting environmental impacts to the liquids hazardous waste business while preventing non-compliance.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead each region in a standardized approach to tracking site-specific regulatory requirements and regularly report on progress and opportunities for improvement.
• Oversee an internal environmental compliance auditing program while ensuring associated processes (e.g., onsite and desktop audit portions, follow-up reporting, action item tracking, etc.) are aligned and effective across the country.
• Review and help prioritize priority site environmental issues and projects.
• Help build and manage positive working relationships with environmental regulating bodies ensuring the team is proactive in legislative trends and regulatory changes.
• Expand the permit application process in all regions by identifying current gaps (or lost business opportunities) and obtaining the necessary permits and licenses to fill those gaps.
• Expand the business’ knowledge/familiarity of environmental regulations through increased training and other information sharing opportunities.
• Oversee relationships with Operations and other support groups to ensure effective teamwork.
• All other related duties as assigned.

What We’re Looking For (Qualifications)

• 12+ years work experience in the hazardous waste industry.
• 7+ years work experience directly involved in environmental/regulatory compliance.
• Post‑secondary degree in a related field (e.g., Chemical/Environmental Engineering/Technology, Environmental Studies, Geography, Chemistry, etc.).
• Experience in building and managing effective/goal-oriented teams.
• A strong overall understanding of the hazardous waste industry.
• Refined analytical and strategic thinking skills.
• Effective team building/management and communication skills.
