Job summary

Gannon University’s Nash Library is seeking a friendly and proactive Student Aide to assist with daily library operations on campus in Erie, PA. The role focuses on patron service, circulation tasks, shelving, and basic tech support.

Successful candidates will greet patrons, help with check-ins/outs/renewals, and maintain a tidy, efficient library space. Evening/weekend availability and Federal Work Study eligibility are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Must be a currently enrolled, full time student.
  • Must have minimum 2.8 GPA.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study.

Responsibilities

  • Greet library patrons in a friendly and welcoming manner.
  • Monitor the building for maintenance needs.
  • Assist patrons with library circulation functions including check-ins, checkouts, renewals, and searches.
  • Enforce ID regulations for borrowing materials.
  • Answer the library phone.
  • Walk through the building hourly to record the number of patrons.
  • Refill printers and copiers as needed.
  • Alert supervisor when supplies need reordered or repairs are needed.
  • Keep the library tidy by pushing in chairs and returning furniture to place.
  • Warn patrons not following library rules and/or alert a supervisor of disruptive patrons.
  • Shelf management tasks, such as shelving books and shelf-reading.
  • Other tasks, as assigned.

Career Readiness Learning Objectives:
Communication

- The student worker will be responsible for effectively communicating library information to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. This could include book location/availability, study room availability, or account information. They must also demonstrate the ability to communicate class schedule information and availability to full time staff.

Technology

- The student worker must have basic knowledge of technology and be able to learn how to use library-specific software and other related technology. They will also use Microsoft Office and other similar programs. They will be responsible for assisting library patrons with setting up wifi and printing on personal devices and other technology-related tasks on a daily basis.

Position Summary

The Nash Library Student Aide will be the face of the library. He/she will be the first and last person the library patrons see and will therefore be an integral part of keeping patrons coming back to the library. The aide will assist staff with daily, routine library operations. Duties may include library searches, general office work, shelf-reading, data entry, pushing in chairs/tidying up the library space, assisting patrons, and maintaining statistics. Good manual dexterity is necessary for specified tasks. Hiring preference will be given to students who are eligible for Federal Work Study. If you are hired, your continued employment may be contingent on you remaining eligible for Federal Work Study.

Essential Functions
  • Greet library patrons in a friendly and welcoming manner
  • Monitor the building for maintenance needs
  • Demonstrate leadership, communication, customer service skills, and the ability to work with staff, students, and members of a diverse background
  • Assist patrons with library circulation functions including (but not limited to): item check ins, item checkouts, item renewals, and searches, all following proper service desk procedures
  • Enforce ID regulations for borrowing materials
  • Answer the library phone
  • Walk through the building hourly to record the number of patrons
  • Refill printers and copiers as needed
  • Alert the service desk supervisor or student supervisor when supplies need reordered, or repairs are needed around the building (furniture, computers, etc.)
  • Keep the library tidy by pushing in chairs and returning furniture to where it belongs
  • Warn patrons that aren’t following library rules, and/or alert a supervisor of overly disruptive patrons
  • Shelf management tasks, such as shelving books and shelf-reading
  • Other tasks, as assigned
Working Conditions

Work is performed in a busy campus setting. Some evening and weekend hours are required. Must be a team player, and willing to cover or trade shifts if necessary. The student must be able to work days, evenings, weekends, and occasional campus holiday breaks if necessary.

Physical Demands
