Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week at minimum.

The Role

The GM Motorsports Program seeks a Performance Engineer to develop, implement, and execute investigations aimed at improving on-track performance for NASCAR Cup series teams. Responsibilities include weekly studies, analysis of prior event performance, race strategy, car build and setup, and simulation models for vehicle performance prediction. The role involves data analytics, vehicle dynamics, and motorsports expertise to guide theoretical and practical studies.

The engineer will collaborate with internal GM groups and race teams, conveying analysis findings and enhancing race team understanding. The position requires developing recommendations to boost competitiveness and working closely with the Simulation group to refine tools and methodologies. Coordination with engineering, IT, and race teams is essential.

What You’ll Do

  1. Support GM Motorsports NCS Teams with vehicle performance insights.
  2. Mine event data for performance trends, analyze telemetry, timing, and scoring data, and utilize race strategy tools.
  3. Use vehicle simulation tools to characterize event sensitivities and derive setup recommendations.
  4. Correlate vehicle models with logged data, comparing model output with actual performance.
  5. Communicate findings through regular reports to GM NASCAR NCS Teams.
  6. Review and improve correlation quality, accuracy of recommendations, and processes.
  7. Develop new methods and tools for performance enhancement.
  8. Support rig and track tests, develop test plans, analyze data, and teach team members.
  9. Travel to NCS events to support on-track engineering efforts.

Build the GM Motorsports program by sharing knowledge, adopting best practices, and providing consolidated recommendations across groups.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Experience with automotive projects, vehicle performance, or amateur motorsports.
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and performance analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C#, or similar programming languages.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and work ethic.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to collaborate effectively.
  • Relocation benefits may be available.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience analyzing on-track performance using vehicle dynamics and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of race car setup, event prep, and race strategy.
  • Proficiency with motorsports data analysis software such as Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools like Dymola/Modelica, ADAMS, CFD codes.
