Job Description

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

The GM Motorsports Program is seeking a Performance Engineer to develop, implement, and execute investigations to improve on-track performance for NASCAR Cup series teams. Responsibilities include conducting weekly studies, analyzing race data, developing tools and analysis techniques, and preparing reports. The role involves research into event performance, race strategy, car setup, and simulation models for vehicle performance prediction. The engineer will utilize data analytics and vehicle dynamics knowledge to guide studies and support race teams.

This position requires collaboration with GM Motorsports groups and race teams to understand needs, convey findings, and enhance the effectiveness of GM motorsports work. The engineer will work with the GM Motorsports Simulation group to refine models and methodologies, and coordinate with other internal groups to share knowledge and develop recommendations to boost team competitiveness.

What You’ll Do

  • Mine event data for performance trends from telemetry, timing, scoring, and strategy tools.
  • Use vehicle simulation tools to analyze sensitivities and derive setup recommendations.
  • Compare logged data with model outputs to understand vehicle and driver behavior.
  • Report findings regularly to GM NASCAR NCS Teams.
  • Review and improve analysis processes and tools.
  • Develop new methods for performance enhancement.
  • Support rig and track tests with data analysis and training.
  • Travel to NCS events for on-track engineering support.

Build the GM Motorsports program by sharing insights across teams and supporting knowledge transfer and collaboration.

  • Coordinate with internal groups to share information and develop consolidated recommendations.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • Experience with automotive projects, vehicle performance, or amateur motorsports (e.g., Formula SAE, autocross, track days).
  • Understanding of vehicle dynamics and performance analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, C#, or similar programming languages.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and work ethic.
  • Self-motivated with problem-solving skills and team collaboration ability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience analyzing on-track performance with vehicle dynamics and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of race car setup, race procedures, and strategy.
  • Proficiency with motorsports data analysis software (Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec).
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools (Dymola/Modelica, ADAMS, CFD).
