Job summary

3M is seeking a Precision Controls Engineer to design, deploy and support ultra-precision manufacturing control systems. You will work across global teams to advance nanometer-scale positioning, implement error budgeting, and lead capital projects.

The role focuses on CNC and advanced motion controls, electrical design, and embedded software development. On-site work at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN with travel up to 35% may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Physical Science completed before start.
• Master’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is a plus.
• Five years of experience designing/deploying motion control systems for manufacturing.
• Experience with precision engineering concepts like error budgeting and metrology.
• Familiarity with linear motors, high-res encoders, ultra-low friction bearings and high-speed servo control.
• Experience with CNC/advanced motion systems (DeltaTau, Newport, PI, Aerotech).
• Electrical design and documentation using ePlan or AutoCAD Electrical.
• Embedded software architecture and development (C/C++, .NET C#, Structured Text, TwinCAT, LabVIEW).

Responsibilities

• Develop, deploy and support advanced control solutions for ultra-precision manufacturing.
• Identify sources of positioning error and ensure machines meet requirements.
• Manage requirements, provide cost/schedule estimates and drive capital equipment projects.
