Job summary

Natera is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to lead design, development, and maintenance of our LIMS application and related software. You will be a primary technical lead within the Software Engineering group, guiding engineers and Technical Product Managers on architecture decisions and best practices.

You will collaborate across stakeholders to deliver scalable, compliant solutions in a regulated clinical environment, with strong emphasis on Java, Python, REST, and modern front-end

Qualifications

• BS degree in computer science, comparable program, or equivalent.
• 10+ years overall software development experience, preferably building complex data or process management applications in production
• 10+ years of experience with Python
• 10+ years of experience with web services (REST, etc) and relational databases
• Experience with front-end web programming, preferably with modern JavaScript frameworks (react, angular, etc.)
• Experience in regulated environments (CLIA/CAP, HIPAA, 21 CFR Part 11, ISO 13485, IEC 62304, GxP) and software validation practices
• Strong relational database skills including database design, migrations, and optimization (PostgreSQL or MySQL preferred)
• Demonstrated experience leading the replacement or consolidation of legacy or disparate systems into a unified platform

Job description

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead the design, development, and maintenance of the LIMS application and related software. You will be one of the primary technical leads of the Software Engineering group, working to provide design solutions and general team leadership to other engineers and Technical Product Managers.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work closely with stakeholders and users to define requirements
• Translate requirements into reliable and extensible operations-friendly applications in Java
• Work with an engineering team to make key design and technical implementation decisions
• Have a holistic view of processes and systems involved in taking patient samples from order to result in a multi-product clinical laboratory
• Understand LIMS platform features and propose solutions that present trade-off analysis and make best use of the platform
• Leverage off‑the‑shelf or existing functionality whenever possible so development resources can be focused on unmet needs
• Integrate other enterprise systems and services to create seamless business processes.
• Improve development process and procedure and evangelize best practices
• Develop and maintain automated tests
• Provide second-tier production support

QUALIFICATIONS

NICE TO HAVE

• Experience building and configuring LIMS or other laboratory workflow software, and implementing external applications and integrations with a LIMS systems, ideally in a clinical, genomics, or high-throughput setting
• Experience integrating laboratory instruments and automation

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Python(FastAPI, Pydantic, SQLAlchemy or similar ORM)
• JavaScript / TypeScript
• Relational Database and SQL Programming, prefer PostgreSQL or MySQL
• REST APIs and Event-Driven Microservice Architecture
• Messaging and event streaming (SQS/SNS, Pub/Sub, Kafka)
• Infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, etc.)
• Docker or container-oriented technologies

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
