MWR Supervisory Recreation Specialist (Fitness Manager)

Summary
This position is located within the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department of Navy Region Southwest (NRSW). Fitness and recreational programs and activities are provided to active duty, retirees, reservists, and their dependents and authorized civilian personnel. The incumbent is responsible for the proper function, administration, and supervision of the Fitness Center, frontline personnel, daily fitness programs, and special fitness events.

Duties

  1. Oversee the function of all fitness programs ensuring safety, quality, implementation, and promotion, including micro fit testing, new program design, group exercise classes, interdepartmental development of fitness, and organization of special events such as certification workshops, health fairs, and extracurricular activities. Manage daily operation of the fitness center, inspect and maintain equipment and facilities in accordance with Navy and industry standards, and ensure timely repairs and maintenance.
  2. Supervise appropriate staff including Recreation Assistants, Recreation Aids, and Fitness Instructors. Responsible for training, scheduling, interviewing, performance evaluation, disciplinary actions, and personnel paperwork. Develop, coordinate, and modify group exercise programs, ensuring safety and effectiveness. Provide technical guidance and organize special events and health promotion projects, collaborating with contractors and marketing professionals.
  3. Assist with developing annual budgets, analyze financial data, monitor revenue and expenses, and ensure proper submission of reports and records. Manage procurement of equipment, supplies, and service contracts.
  4. Create and oversee exercise and wellness programs, ensuring they meet ACSM guidelines. Identify cardiovascular risk factors, refer patrons to medical personnel, supervise equipment operation, and ensure staff training. Oversee contract fitness instructors and coordinate with the contracting office and payroll. Ensure adherence to EEO policies and maintain quality in employee management.
  5. Research and create educational materials, perform equipment checks, report damages, and oversee contract quality assurance. Prepare reports and pay sheets, reconcile class utilization and payments, and assist clients professionally. Present fitness information to the command and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must pass all applicable background checks and the E-Verify employment verification.

Qualifications

  • Certification from a recognized agency such as ACSM, ACE, or Cooper Clinic, or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • CPR and AED certification required.
  • Knowledge of strength training and cardiovascular equipment, with ability to perform minor repairs.
  • At least one year of experience conducting graded exercise tests, assessments, counseling, and writing exercise prescriptions for diverse populations.
  • Ability to evaluate programs, develop presentations, and communicate effectively.

Additional Information

Salary depends on experience and education. Participation in a probationary period and electronic fund transfer are required. The position may require travel and adherence to federal workplace policies, including drug-free workplace and Real ID requirements.
