Summary
This position is located in the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR)/Quality of Life (QOL) Department in Navy Region, Southwest. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a working leader while performing a full range of lifeguard and water safety instruction functions.
Responsibilities
- Provide work direction to Recreation Aids (Lifeguard) and Recreation Assistants (Water Safety Instructors), passing instructions from supervisor and setting the pace for lifeguard and water safety programs.
- Assist with establishing work schedules, monitor work progress, ensure procedures and deadlines are met, and keep the supervisor informed of work status and issues.
- Evaluate participants' progress, inform participants and guardians, and recommend actions to support their development.
- Assist with special events organized by the Aquatics Director and/or Assistant Aquatics Director.
- Serve as a lifeguard, monitoring pool activities to ensure safety and prevent accidents.
- Enforce water safety rules, educate swimmers about risks, and caution against unsafe practices.
- Respond to emergencies, perform rescues, administer first aid, CPR, and artificial respiration as needed, and follow emergency procedures.
- Complete accident reports and notify supervisors of incidents promptly.
- Maintain water quality by performing checks, reporting deficiencies, and logging results.
- Ensure aquatic equipment is in proper working order, initiate maintenance requests, and verify completion.
- May be responsible for opening and closing the pool, maintaining security, and ensuring compliance with procedures.
- Provide information to customers about programs and policies.
- Perform housekeeping to maintain cleanliness and safety of pool areas and related facilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Meet federal employment suitability and background investigation requirements.
- Pass E-Verify employment verification.
- Work indoors and outdoors, with possible exposure to sun and eye irritation.
- Work irregular hours, including early/late shifts, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Wear protective clothing and equipment as needed.
- Lift and carry swimmers of various sizes.
- Be prepared to respond to emergencies at all times.
Qualifications
- At least two years of lifeguard experience.
- Must be at least 18 years old with lifeguard functions performed.
- Current valid WSI/lifeguard, first aid, and CPR certifications.
- Knowledge of rescue techniques, emergency aid, water safety, and regulations.
- Ability to perform water quality checks and enforce rules.
- Ability to prepare reports, follow instructions, communicate effectively, and lead.
Education
- Must possess and maintain certifications in Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional, and Standard First Aid.
- Provide a copy of valid Lifeguarding certification upon application.
Additional Information
Compliance with Executive Order 12564 regarding drug-free workplace is required. The position involves working both indoors and outdoors, with possible exposure to sun and chemicals, and irregular hours including holidays and weekends.
