Job Description


The Secondary Instrumental Music Teacher facilitates student success in academic and interpersonal skills by implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, addressing specific educational needs, providing a safe and optimal learning environment, and offering feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding progress, expectations, and goals. The ideal candidate will teach either band, orchestra, or modern music, depending on district needs and the candidate's specialty.


This position reports to the Principal.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred.
  • Certificates & Licenses: Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Music: Instrumental PreK-12 or eligibility to obtain one.

Essential Functions:

  • Adapts classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
  • Administers developmental testing programs and subject-specific assessments to assess student competency levels and develop individual learning plans.
  • Communicates student progress, expectations, and achievements to parents and guardians; develops methods for improvement and reinforcement of classroom goals at home.
  • Assesses student progress towards objectives and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Collaborates with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources to improve student outcomes and support the school improvement plan.
  • Counsels students on performance, health, problem-solving, and personal issues.
  • Demonstrates methods to perform classroom and subject-specific assignments effectively, addressing individual student needs.
  • Supervises assistant teachers, student teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, and student workers to support classroom effectiveness.
  • Instructs students to improve academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills through a structured course of study.
  • Manages student behavior to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Monitors students in various settings (classroom, playground, field trips, etc.) for safety and positive environment.
  • Participates in meetings to share and gather information necessary for job functions.
  • Prepares written documentation (grades, attendance, records) to track student progress and meet requirements.
  • Reports incidents such as fights, suspected abuse, or substance use to maintain safety and comply with policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support effective operation of the work unit.

Public Health Compliance:
