Job Description

Position: Music Teacher

Licensure: K-12 Music

Reports to: Elementary School Principal

Employment Status: RegularFLSA Status: Exempt

Description: Develop an appreciation of various music and musical forms; provide varied opportunities for students to become successfully involved in musical expression in an encouraging environment; assist students to learn the structure and makeup of music, i.e., notes, rhythms, beats, etc.

NOTE: The below lists are not ranked in order of importance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent from a four-year college or university
  • Appropriate State of Ohio licensure
  • Certification in Contemporary Music Education Methodologies preferred
  • Such alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate

  • Knowledge of academic area and teaching methodology
  • Ability to work effectively with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
  • Effective, active listening skills

  • Training in varied instructional design
  • Knowledge of child development and an understanding of age appropriate tasks
  • Background/knowledge base in methodology and supervised practice

  • Ability to demonstrate performance skills with keyboard and classroom instruments
  • Ability to read, write, and compose music in a variety of keys and clefs

Essential Functions

  • Ensure safety of students
  • Teach and evaluate the students using sound instructional practices
  • Effectively manage the classroom and individual student behavior to maintain a good learning environment
  • Prepare clear and timely lesson plans
  • Maintain accurate, complete and correct records as required
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the students which will promote their welfare and their proper educational development
  • Counsel with colleagues, students and parents
  • Provide complete lesson plans for substitute
  • Maintain and improve professional competence
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with parents through effective use of interim reports, report cards, and conferences
  • Observe ethics of the teaching profession; exhibit professional behavior, emotional stability and sound judgment
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
  • Instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated
  • Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Coordinate music with drama in special seasonal programs and graduations
  • Oversee, coordinate and teach music for musical assemblies
  • Select appropriate music for each grade level
  • Attend parent-teacher conferences
  • Keep abreast of current music and trends in the arts
  • Make contacts with the public with tact and diplomacy
  • Maintain respect at all times for confidential information, e.g., student test scores, family information
  • Interact in a positive manner with staff, students and parents
  • Attend meetings and in-services as required
  • Assist the administration in implementing all procedures and rules governing student life and conduct, and develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure for the classroom, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Distribute homework assignments

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Make provisions for being available to students and parents for educational-related purposes outside the instruction day
  • Regularly participate in music education professional development opportunities
  • Refer students suspected of learning disabilities for diagnosis on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required
  • Teach students music reading, vocal production, and stage presence
  • Audition prospective students for musical productions
  • Assist in planning and writing the comprehensive arts curriculum and attend meetings on its integration
  • Plan, schedule and organize educational field trips and assemblies
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers and paraprofessionals
  • Plan and schedule activities to meet individual student needs and activities to support the grade level curriculum
  • Serve as a role model for students
  • Respond to routine questions and requests in an appropriate manner
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designee

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue

  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, and pull various items up to a maximum of 25 pounds, e.g., paper boxes, deliveries of supplies and equipment
  • Frequently move and position self as necessary to access and operate equipment
  • Frequently move around workspace and travel throughout school building and/or school district
