Job summary

The Children’s Museum of South Dakota is seeking a Museum Custodian in Brookings, SD. This full‑time role (≈38 hours/week) focuses on keeping the museum clean, safe, and welcoming for visitors, with responsive custodial support across spaces.

Responsibilities include routine cleaning, restroom sanitation, spill response, and light outdoor maintenance as needed. Shifts include evenings and weekends; flexible, reliable, and capable of heavy lifting up to 50 pounds are essential.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years of custodial or maintenance experience required.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Follow and enforce established systems, processes, and procedures with consistency.
• Great attention to detail in all tasks.
• Adaptable, flexible, self-motivated and able to work independently.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a clean, safe, welcoming Museum environment, with focus on public spaces.
• Perform routine custodial care including vacuuming, mopping, dusting and trash removal.
• Clean, sanitize and restock restrooms and high-use areas.
• Respond promptly to spills and urgent custodial needs.
• Maintain floors, windows, fixtures and surfaces; perform periodic deep cleaning.
• Inspect spaces and report safety or maintenance concerns.
• Manage custodial supplies and equipment; notify supervisor of inventory needs.
• Complete scheduled deep cleaning and other custodial projects as assigned.
• Adhere to Museum safety protocols; assist with light outdoor maintenance and snow removal as needed.
• Assist with room setup and breakdown for meetings, rentals, and events.
