Job summary

City of Jackson seeks an Accounting Assistant for the Public Works/Utilities Fiscal Services. The role reports to the Fiscal Supervisor and handles complex accounting tasks, payroll, budgeting, procurement, and grant administration.

Strong data entry and customer service skills are required. The position supports the Departments of Public Works and Engineering, working both independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent plus two years of general office and accounting experience.
• Knowledge of accounting standards and procedures.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; handling confidential information.

Responsibilities

• Performs clerical and accounting duties to support Public Works and Engineering, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, budgeting, and grant administration.
• Prepares journal entries, balance reports, and budget progress reports; reconciles procurement cards.
• Maintains employee timecard records and payroll-related files; ensures proper approvals and data accuracy.
• Generates accounts receivable invoices for services and utility charges; analyzes costs for invoicing.
• Assists with grant applications and reporting; tracks revenues and expenditures across multiple funds and projects.
