The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University (LSU) invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in:
We seek an experimentalist whose work advances the synthesis, interface control, and characterization of quantum materials. Areas of interest include bulk crystals, superconducting thin films and heterostructures for quantum technologies, low-dimensional and two-dimensional materials, topological and correlated-electron systems, magnetic, spintronic and twistronic materials, and materials for quantum computing or quantum sensing. We also welcome research developing or applying advanced characterization approaches, including spectroscopy, microscopy and imaging, ultrafast and nonlinear techniques, and local probes, to understand the structural, electronic, magnetic, and dynamical properties of quantum materials.
We invite applicants with a strong record of research in experimental solid-state device physics, including superconducting devices, semiconducting devices and magnetic devices, as well as hybrids of these device-based materials, with potential applications in quantum computing and sensing. The ideal candidate's research will complement and enhance the activities of the experimental and theoretical Quantum Science and Technology groups in the Colleges of Science and Engineering.
Primary activities for each appointment include leading an externally funded research program, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and supervising PhD students.
These two Physics positions are part of LSU's Quantum Materials, Devices and Sensing broader hiring initiative in Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE). This initiative additionally includes four searches in Computational Materials (Physics and Chemical Engineering), Quantum Device Fabrication and Production (Electrical and Computer Engineering), Quantum AI/ML and Algorithms (Computer Science and Engineering), and Computational Quantum Chemistry (Chemistry), reflecting LSU's strategic investment in building an interdisciplinary quantum research community spanning device fabrication, materials, algorithms, and theory.
The successful candidates will build a vibrant, cutting-edge experimental program that complements LSU's strengths in superconductivity, quantum materials theory, surface science, and ultrafast and quantum optical physics. The successful candidates will be encouraged to foster collaborations with faculty in Physics and Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering, and the Center for Computation and Technology (CCT), as well as with U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories. LSU currently offers thin-film growth synthesis, in-house synchrotron-based characterization at the Louisiana Light Source, high-performance computing, access to partner-institution fabrication and national user facilities, and generous startup packages . The candidates will be well positioned to pursue center-scale and multi-investigator funding opportunities in quantum information science materials, and will have opportunities to contribute to the development of graduate training in Quantum Science and Technology.
The Department's condensed matter and quantum information groups include a strong superconductivity cohort in theory and experiment, superconducting qubit theory, quantum materials and disordered quantum matter theory, computational materials physics, magnetic materials, experimental quantum photonics, and surface science. The department has recently hired several faculty in quantum science and is recruiting additional faculty in this area, reflecting a sustained institutional commitment to quantum science and technology. LSU is a partner in DOE's Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems Center based at Fermil
LSU's Department of Physics and Astronomy offers a broad research community including quantum materials, quantum information, AMO physics, astrophysics, neutrino physics, high energy and nuclear physics, gravitational physics, and medical physics. Research resources include the Louisiana Light Source , one of
