Job summary

ABB Inc. offers an internship opportunity in their Research Department in Raleigh, NC. Interns will gain practical experience through diverse projects, supporting ABB's operations and enhancing education opportunities.

The role is onsite/hybrid, with responsibilities spanning R&D tasks in electrical, mechanical, and AI topics. Intern must be enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program in relevant fields, with coursework in machine design, modelling, mechatronics, and AI implementations.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in Electrical/Mechanical/Materials Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or similar (recent graduates will also be considered)
  • Specialized coursework in electrical machines design and testing, mechanical/thermal modelling, mechatronics prototyping, or AI implementation

Responsibilities

  • Support ABB R&D projects and investigations related to electrical, mechanical, thermal topics, and/or AI
  • Find and evaluate state-of-the-art technology from public sources
  • Contribute and critique new ideas, features, solutions, and evaluation strategies
  • Help design, draw, and model new components and test setups
  • Help design, run, and document calculations, simulations, laboratory tests, and experiments
  • Uphold ABB's safety and integrity values and care for colleagues and the business

This position reports to:

Research Department Manager

As an intern, you will have the opportunity to gain practical experience through various projects. Each day, you will acquire knowledge by performing tasks as directed. You will also showcase your skills by supporting ABB's operations and enhancing personal education/employment opportunities.

The work model for the role is onsite/hybrid in Raleigh, NC.

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Supporting ABB R&D projects and investigations related to electrical, mechanical, thermal topics, and or (generative) AI
  • Finding and evaluating state-of-the art technology from public sources
  • Contributing and critiquing new ideas, features, solutions, and evaluation strategies
  • Helping design, draw, and model new components and test set-ups
  • Helping design, run, and document calculations, simulations, laboratory tests, and experiments

Qualifications for the role:

  • Currently enrolled in a' Master's or PhD degree program in the US in Electrical/Mechanical/Materials Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or similar (recent graduates will also be considered)
  • Specialized coursework and research/project work in at least one of the following: electrical machines design and testing, mechanical/thermal modelling, mechatronics experimental prototyping, and implementation of (generative) AI
  • Intern must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorshipnow and in the future.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to analyze complex situations and develop strategic solutions.
  • Effectively organize and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Exhibit the capability to manage several tasks at once while maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Collaborate with team members to convey ideas, share information, and provide updates on project progress.

The hourly rate is determined by things such as the successful applicant's qualifications, graduation year and experience. This position is expected to pay between $20 - $34 per hour.
