Job Description
Position Title: Multilingual Learner Tutor (MLL Tutor)
Reports To: Principal and/or Assistant Principal
Location: Highlander Way Middle School
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Union Affiliation: HESPA
Days/Hours: Monday - Friday, 30 hours/week (Specific schedule TBD)
Duration: Ten Months (Student School Days; Aug 17, 2026 - May 28, 2027 as scheduled)
Summary
The Multilingual Learner Tutor assists, supports and works closely with teachers, paraprofessionals and other team members in providing educational benefits for students with limited English language proficiency.
Essential Functions
- Facilitates communication/translation between parents, students and teachers, as needed.
- Assists with administering state mandated and district/building/class level assessments, including mid‑term and final examinations.
- Works with individual teachers to support children with limited English proficiency in the general education classroom.
- Continually monitors MLL students in the District.
- Participates in Kindergarten Open House, Kindergarten Registration, and/or assisting students with course scheduling at the secondary level.
- In‑person attendance is required.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
- Fluent English language skills (speaking, reading, writing, listening).
- Strong understanding of the English language, including grammar, phonics, sentence structure, comprehension, and speaking skills.
- Experience with a second language; fluency preferred but not required.
- Strong one‑on‑one student support skills.
- Teamwork ability with teachers and other MLL tutors.
- High school diploma (or equivalent) and one of the following:
- Complete at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (equal to 60 semester hours).
- Obtain an Associate’s Degree (or higher).
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrate a formal state or local academic assessment (details below).
- Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
- Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in, instructing reading readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
Assessment Options
- ETS ParaPro Assessment – a passing score of 460 is required.
- Michigan Test for Teacher Certification – Basic Skills (MTTC) – a passing score on the Basic Skills Test MTTC is required.
- SAT (taken on or after March 5, 2016) – evidence‑based Reading & Writing score of 480; Mathematics score of 530.
- ACT (taken between January 1, 1989 and October 1, 2017) – Reading score of 22; Combined English/Writing score of 22; Mathematics score of 22.
- Michigan Merit Examination (MME) (taken between January 1, 2007 and January 31, 2015) – Reading score of 1108; Writing score of 1129; Mathematics score of 1116.
- WorkKeys (taken before June 1, 2017) – Reading for Information Level 4 minimum; Applied Mathematics Level 4 minimum; Writing Level 3 minimum.
Language Skills
- Fluent in English – speaking, reading, writing, listening.
- Strong understanding of English, including grammar, phonics, sentence structure, comprehension, speaking skills.
- Experience with a second language; fluency preferred but not required.
- Strong one‑on‑one student support skills.
- Effective presentation of information and response to questions from administrators, students, staff, parents, and general public.
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure.
- Apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
Reasoning Ability
- Solve practical problems and handle varied concrete situations with limited standardization.
- Interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Qualifications / Skills
- Knowledge of W‑APT, WIDA assessments preferred.
- Experience working with students in a tutorial setting.
- Experience with the Rosetta Stone English program preferred.
- Computer experience – ability to look up websites and use online assessment programs.
- Awareness of district requirements and board policies.
- Ability to support academics and behavior management with individuals and groups of students.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and community.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
- Professional demeanor in appearance and behavior.
- Learn new skills, flexibility and willingness to perform a variety of tasks.
- Assist in instruction of reading, writing and mathematics, science and social studies.
- Patience working with children.
- Accuracy and detail orientation.
- Follow written and oral directions and complete assignments.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, grammatical, spelling, and punctuation skills.
Physical Demands
- Frequently required to stoop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions.
- May frequently lift and/or move at least 35 pounds of materials.
- Close vision needed to read handwritten or typed material; ability to adjust focus.
- Interact with the public and other staff; meet multiple demands from several people.
Environmental Adaptability
- Work environment is indoors with controlled climate; occasionally outdoors during brief periods in varying weather.
- Noise level is moderate to loud.
