Job summary

The Westport Library is seeking a detail-oriented Cataloger to join the Materials Management team at 20 Jesup Road, Westport, CT. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of bibliographic records and supports procurement and deaccessioning of library materials across formats including fiction, nonfiction, magazines, and non-book materials.

Qualifications

• MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent library experience.
• Extensive knowledge of cataloging principles (RDA, MARC, AACR2, LCSH) and the Dewey Decimal system.
• Prior experience with integrated library systems; knowledge of Polaris and OCLC Connexion preferred.
• Ability to stand, bend, and lift up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Ensures accuracy and integrity of bibliographic and material records in the Library Management System
• Receives pre-processed books from vendors, checking for cataloging and processing errors
• Catalogs and classifies materials according to current established standards (MARC and Dewey Decimal Classification)
• Creates original cataloging and upgrades copy catalog records for the Children’s collection and adult fiction materials
• Manages book standing orders, including reviewing, cataloging, and processing
• Manages the serial collection, including receiving, processing, shelving, claiming, and withdrawing materials
• Maintains authority records and performs database maintenance to ensure catalog integrity
• Manages reclassification of items when required
• Completes physical processing of library materials, including covering, labeling, stamping, and packaging
• Serves on Library cross-functional committees or supports projects as needed
• Collaborates with all departments to ensure seamless and excellent service to our community
• Works at the service desk as required
• Performs other duties as assigned
