Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; journeyman-level civil/construction experience preferred.
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications and drawings.
  • Knowledge of concrete forming systems and reinforcing steel placement practices.
  • Experience on industrial, commercial, heavy civil, or infrastructure projects preferred.

Job description

Job Summary: The Civil Journeyman performs skilled civil construction work involving concrete placement and finishing, form carpentry, reinforcing steel installation, excavation support, and general site construction activities. This position requires experience in multiple civil trades, including carpentry, concrete, and rebar, while maintaining high safety and quality standards on industrial, commercial, or heavy civil construction projects. The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications, and experience with concrete/rebar, form building, and use of heavy industrial equipment installation and repair.

Key Responsibilities:
Carpentry Duties

  • Build, install, align, and dismantle concrete forms for foundations, walls, slabs, columns, and structural components.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, specifications, and layout information.
  • Measure, cut, and assemble wood, metal, and prefabricated form systems.
  • Install anchors, embeds, blackouts, and other embedded items.
  • Verify elevations, dimensions, and alignment using levels, lasers, and measuring tools.
  • Construct temporary structures, barricades, and work platforms as required.
  • Place, spread, vibrate, and finish concrete for slabs, foundations, sidewalks, curbs, walls, and structural pours.
  • Operate power tools and equipment related to concrete work, including saws, vibrators, screeds, and finishing tools.
  • Assist with concrete pours, curing, patching, and repairs.
  • Monitor concrete quality and ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Perform surface finishing such as broom finish, trowel finish, edging, and jointing.
  • Assist with setup and removal of concrete forms and shoring systems.
  • Read and interpret rebar placing drawings and schedules.
  • Measure, cut, bend, place, and tie reinforcing steel according to specifications.
  • Install rebar, wire mesh, dowels, anchor bolts, and reinforcing assemblies.
  • Secure reinforcement using tie wire, clips, chairs, and supports.
  • Ensure proper spacing, clearances, and alignment of reinforcing steel before concrete placement.
  • Assist with rigging and material handling of reinforcing steel.
  • Perform excavation support, grading, trench work, and site preparation activities.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Assist crane operators, equipment operators, and other trades as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and project safety requirements.
  • Participate in daily job hazard analyses, toolbox talks, and safety meetings.
  • Identify and report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or quality concerns.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Journeyman-level experience in civil construction, concrete, carpentry, or reinforcing steel installation.
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of concrete forming systems and reinforcing steel placement practices.
  • Experience working on industrial, commercial, heavy civil, or infrastructure projects preferred.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety practices and PPE requirements.
  • Must have own craft tools

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb, and work in physically demanding environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work at heights, in trenches, and around heavy equipment.
  • Construction site environment with exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and heavy equipment.
  • May require overtime, weekends, and travel depending on project needs.
  • Extreme weather conditions

Certifications Preferred

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
  • NCCER credentials
  • Rigging and signaling certification
  • Equipment operation experience preferred
  • TWIC preferred
