Job summary

Southern University at New Orleans invites applications for the Facilities and Grounds Technician role in the Department of Facilities Management. The position supports the campus environment, maintains buildings, grounds, and infrastructure, and coordinates with contractors and vendors.

The technician develops maintenance schedules, diagnoses issues, and ensures safe, functional operations across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and related systems.

Qualifications

• Valid driver's license required.
• Availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, on-call rotations and emergency operations.
• Experience in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, or related trades.

Responsibilities

• Perform skilled and semi-skilled scheduled, unscheduled, corrective, and preventive maintenance on campus buildings, grounds, equipment, and machinery.
• Assemble, install, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical and electronic components and related systems.
• Diagnose equipment and facility problems; consult codes, blueprints, manuals, safety data, and manufacturer instructions.
• Repair or replace defective components and test operation after repairs.
• Maintain inventory of spare parts, supplies, tools, and consumables; communicate replenishment needs.
• Develop, update, and monitor maintenance schedules, work plans, project timelines, and preventive-maintenance activities.
• Coordinate with contractors and vendors; monitor work and verify completion within scope.
• Lead or coordinate other maintenance staff on projects; provide direction and report to the Director.
• Assist with project planning, site prep, implementation, and documentation.
