Shift: Per Diem (PU) (10 hrs. per wk. M-F) Days, evenings, flexible schedule (depending on availability) occasional on call weekends may be required.

Work Location: UM Hospital - South UTower - Imaging Services Department

The Multi-Modality Technologist is responsible for performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures through the operations of radiographic equipment to obtain the highest quality of diagnostic images with the least amount of radiation exposure. Independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative are essential in addition to responsibility for designated areas, procedures, and equipment. The Multi-Modality Imaging Technologist provides diagnostic imaging in multiple specialties in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and within the policies, values, and mission of the organization. The technologist will spend a minimum of 25% of time practicing in a special discipline.

Specialized modalities include:

  1. X-ray (RT)
  2. Computed Tomography (CT)
  3. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  4. Nuclear Medicine (NM)

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Produces diagnostic imaging studies in two (2) or more specialized imaging modalities.
  2. Coordinate/manage scheduling and patient flow for interdepartmental procedures.
  3. Performs diagnostic imaging studies under the direction/supervision of a radiologist.
  4. Assist with the education and training of new physicians.
  5. Assist radiologists and PhDs in developing new protocols and imaging techniques that are unique to the facility.
  6. Participate in research initiatives and development of research protocols.
  7. Monitor charging of procedures and supplies daily to ensure correctness.
  8. Demonstrate equipment for 'site visits' for visiting physicians and administrators.
  9. Provide in-service classes in section.
  10. Obtains and examines the order for a scan to be aware of information such as procedures requested, patient’s condition, and any other special notes or comments.
  11. Ensures that orders are appropriate to the type of exam recommended by the physician.
  12. Identifies patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements.
  13. Verify the patient’s ID by checking their name and date of birth on electronic medical record and patient’s wristband.
  14. Always obtain necessary consents and education.
  15. Perform complex specialized tasks associated with the operation of Diagnostic Radiologic scanners and related equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety procedures under the direction/supervision of a Radiologist using age-appropriate standards of practice.
  16. Ability to integrate diagnostic, laboratory results, patient history, and medical records and adapt exam as necessary.
  17. Consistently demonstrates complete competence in performing scans as ordered.
  18. As required during a procedure, assists positioning patients in required anatomical position for display of body for scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary.
  19. Maintain proper aseptic technique utilizing universal precaution guidelines.
  20. Assist radiologist with imaging procedures, starting IV's, and injecting contrast, if applicable.
  21. Evaluate scans for technical quality, collate processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriately label.
  22. Schedule patients for procedures; assist with clerical functions.
  23. Charge procedures and supplies.
  24. Dispense radiopharmaceuticals orally, as per approved protocol.
  25. Load and operate power injectors for contrast media administration.
  26. Maintain accurate patient records.
  27. Provide assistance with orientation and training of new technologists.
  28. Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of treatment; answering questions.
  29. Provide education and training to student technologists.
  30. Applies physical age-specific and/or developmental care needs of patients according to their documented physical/development requirement.
  31. Performs basic nursing functions in the patient’s care.
  32. Keeps work area in a clean and sanitary condition and stocks exam/dressing rooms with required supplies.
  33. Provides on-call coverage.
  34. Reports unusual findings in a timely manner to appropriate Radiologist/Supervisory personnel.
  35. Abide by hospital/department HR policies.
  36. Adheres to any regulatory body guidelines governing modality.
  37. The multi-modality technologist must rotate in the department “on call” schedule where applicable.

Department Specific Functions:

Spends a minimum of 25% of time practicing in secondary specialty discipline.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a Radiologic Technology accredited program.

Certification and Licensing: Must be ARRT registered in at least 2 modalities. Must possess a valid State of Florida License. CPR and BLS certification required.

Experience: One to three years of relevant experience preferred.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.
