Job description

About Washington Trails Association

Washington Trails Association (WTA) is the nation’s largest state-based trail nonprofit. For 60 years, we've been mobilizing public lands advocates, trail stewards and on-the-ground hiking experts in pursuit of our vision of Trails for Everyone Forever. Each year, with the support of over 23,000 donating members, WTA staff and more than 3,500 volunteers perform over 160,000 hours of trail maintenance across the state. Through our online Hiking Guide and Trailblazer app, we help hundreds of thousands of people find trails, from everyday adventures to backcountry explorations. Our vision depends on fostering an organization and outdoor community where all people are welcome, represented and included.

WTA’s Trail Maintenance Team

WTA’s Trail Maintenance (TM) team engages in trail work throughout the year, with work parties ranging from single day outings to multi-day backcountry trips. Our crews build and maintain trails and structures in close coordination with land managers. This hybrid (office and field-based support) position is part of our volunteer team, playing a critical part in that effort by stewarding the creation, launch and safe implementation of our annual multi-day trip offerings.

About this opportunity

Washington Trails Association is seeking a Multi-Day Trip Program Coordinator who loves working with people and shares our commitment to trail stewardship, volunteerism and building community. The primary responsibility of this role involves planning and developing multi‑day trail maintenance volunteer opportunities statewide. This position reports to the Senior Volunteer Programs Coordinator and is responsible for supervising 2‑3 temporary seasonal crew leaders. This is a full‑time, non‑exempt, hybrid (annually averaging 80% office / 20% field) position with a base of operations at WTA’s Seattle Office.

  • Identify and coordinate volunteer trail maintenance work party projects with WTA staff, government and non‑government partners and group/community organizers.

  • Provide content and photos for blogs, social media, magazine and other WTA communications.

  • Perform crew and project site visits as needed statewide. Site visits often require long drives and camping, either in the backcountry with crews or frontcounty while enroute.

Leadership Development and Support
  • Hire and supervise 2‑3 seasonal trail crew leaders and support volunteer trail crew leaders throughout the season.

  • Collaborate with the Logistics Coordinator to ensure program needs are identified and met.

  • Assist with statewide volunteer leadership recruitment and mentorship.

  • Support statewide leadership, safety and technical training opportunities for volunteers and staff

  • Train, motivate and lead volunteers to complete a variety of trail projects to established technical standards.

  • Manage emergency situations and report incidents following WTA’s emergency response protocols.

  • Provide team support and coverage to volunteer programs as needed, including responding to volunteer inquiries via email or phone.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Competitive candidates will highlight the following in their application, or express willingness to learn:

  • Prior nonprofit program coordination and training facilitation experience or equivalent.

  • Ability to set priorities, manage a variety of responsibilities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to meet program/organization goals, enthusiasm for embracing new challenges.

Location and schedule

The Multi‑Day Trip Program Coordinator is a full‑time, non‑exempt position based in WTA’s Seattle Office and includes evening, weekend and backcountry trip support. WTA has a hybrid work model that generally entails at least 2 days of work per week in‑person at our Seattle office. The work schedule for this role changes depending on the season and programs operating, but the typical schedule is 40 hours per week over 5 days. During the field season, the Coordinator may be required to lead or support crews of adult volunteers performing backcountry trail projects for up to eight days in length. WTA is willing to provide training to those without prior trail crew leadership experience. Some evening or weekend work may be required to attend meetings and to assist with staff and volunteer training.

Compensation

Compensation starts at $25.50‑$27.50 per hour depending on experience. Our benefits package includes medical, dental, vision, retirement, disability, transportation and holiday, vacation and sick leave. For more information about WTA’s benefits, please visit www.wta.org/benefits.

WTA provides a cell phone, hard hat, work gloves and safety glasses. A WTA vehicle will be provided for transportation to work parties whenever possible. Reimbursement for up to 250 miles per round trip will be provided for staff members who use a personal vehicle to fulfill program needs, unless commuting to/from base of operations. For multi‑day overnight trips, this position is paid a supplementary per diem rate of up to $50/day.

Our hiring process

At WTA, we consistently evaluate and update our hiring process to align with current best practices for equity and inclusion. The hiring process for this role will include a phone screen, virtual panel interview, in‑person panel interview and in‑person conversation in the Seattle office. There may also be a request for additional steps or information as needed. WTA’s practice is to run a background check for any role that may work with youth or have access to sensitive database information. We will provide candidates the opportunity to discuss any results before final hiring decisions are made. If you have any questions or need accommodation in our hiring process please contact jobs@wta.org.

Equal opportunity

We believe WTA, and Washington’s outdoor community, is stronger when made up of people with varied backgrounds, identities, abilities and lived experiences. WTA is committed to advancing equity and continually working to become a more inclusive organization. People of color and people with other identities that are underrepresented in the outdoor industry — including but not limited to gender identity, class, sexual orientation, age, ability and background — are strongly encouraged to apply.
