Montana State University - Office of Student Engagement is seeking a non-tenure track MSSE Instructor to teach graduate-level science education courses. Courses may be online or on campus and could occur during fall, spring, or summer sessions.

The pool supports multiple terms and funding availability. Qualifications include a doctoral or master’s degree in science fields and prior university teaching or K-12 teaching experience, with curriculum development experience preferred.

It is an instructor position for a fall, spring, or summer graduate level science or education course. MSSE graduate students enrolled in the course are practicing K-12 teachers of science working in public and/or private institutions and non-traditional/informal instructional settings.

General Statement

Montana State University seeks qualified individuals to provide non-tenurable level instruction and/or related functions. Instructors are needed to teach classes depending upon need and available funding.

Applications are accepted on a continual basis (unless otherwise indicated) and will be maintained in pool for two years. After two years, candidates will be notified to re-submit materials for continued consideration.

The department or program search committees or hiring authority will review and evaluate the submitted application materials. Applicants will be notified if their application is being retained in the non-tenure track faculty hiring pool.

Appointments are on a part-time basis and vary in duration, a couple weeks, a semester or an academic year, depending on the specific needs of the department/program. Salary is dependent on number of courses taught and duration.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teach MSSE online and/or campus field/lab science courses in the disciplines of Ecology, Biology, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Earth Science/Geology, Land Resources and Environmental Science, Microbiology, Physics, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Plant Science as well as Education during fall and/or spring semesters and/or summer session.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Doctoral or master’s degree in science, science education, engineering, agriculture or other science education fields.
  • University teaching experience, and/or experience teaching K-12, and/or experience working as an education coordinator or curriculum developer in public or private organizations.
Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Familiarity with The Next Generation Science Standards and guideline for science teacher education and distance learning.
  • Experience in development, delivery and assessment of graduate courses.
The Successful Candidate Will
  • Possess the ability, skills, and knowledge to successfully engage and educate graduate students.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision, while establishing effective working relations with graduate students.
  • Ability to develop, deliver and assess innovative graduate level courses.
  • Ability and knowledge to successfully teach in a distance delivery mode.
  • Have a commitment to interdisciplinary education.

  • Non-Tenure Track Faculty – Any position that is .5 FTE or more is represented by the Associated Faculty of Montana State University (AFMSU).   • Any position less than .5 FTE is not represented by the Union and is not required to pay dues.
  • If the FTE changes during employment, the representational status of this position could be impacted.
