Job summary

Westside Federation of Senior & Supportive Housing (WSFSSH) is seeking Kitchen Assistants for its Multi-Site Support pool in New York, NY. The role supports meal service under supervision, performing prep, service, cleaning and safety-compliant duties across various sites.

Responsibilities

• Clean food service areas including equipment, kitchen, storage and dining area.
• Dishwashing, pot washing, and other cleaning duties as assigned.
• Assist with distribution and setup of meal service and food prep per safety procedures.
• Assist in accepting and properly storing food deliveries per NYC health regulations.
• Label, date and rotate stock as required.
• Meet with supervisors regularly to discuss procedures and best practices.
• Work as a team to maintain high level of care and communication with residents.
• Collaborate with kitchen staff and other departments as needed.
• Share resident progress and needs with appropriate staff.
• Attend training sessions and conferences to enhance skills.
• Implement emergency procedures as necessary.
• Work independently when required.

Multi-Site Support (MSS) Program Overview

WSFSSH's Multi Site Support program provides flexible, on-demand staffing coverage across our 30+ residential and program sites, all of which require 24/7 support. Team members step in to fill scheduling gaps and ensure consistent, high-quality service for the individuals and communities we serve — often across multiple roles including Personal Care Assistants (PCAs), Porters, Kitchen Aides, and Program Aides.

This pool is a great fit for candidates who want flexible scheduling, exposure to different sites and teams, and the opportunity to build experience across WSFSSH's supportive housing programs. Many per diem staff use this as a pathway into full-time roles within the organization.

JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Food Service Manager and or Cook #2, the Kitchen Assistant will be responsible for assisting with distribution, service and clean-up of the meal program.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Responsible for the cleaning (e.g., mopping and sweeping) of the food service areas, which includes equipment, kitchen, storage, and dining area.
• Responsible for the dishwashing, pot washing, and other cleaning duties as assigned.
• Assist with the distribution and set up of the meal service, which may include helping with food preparation when following all food safety procedures outlined by NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
• Assist in accepting food deliveries and proper storage of food deliveries following all NYC Department of health regulations.
• Participate with proper labeling and dating and rotation of stock.
• Meet with supervisors on a regular basis to discuss food service, procedures and best practices
• Work as a member of a team toestablishand maintainhigh-level of care and respect for and communication with residents
• Work cooperatively with all staff and kitchen team members
• Share information about resident progress, needs, and problems withappropriate staff
• Attend training sessions and conferences asrequiredfor enhancement of job skills
• Implement emergency procedures, as necessary
• Must be able to work independently, when required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Previous experience in a commercial kitchen
• Ability to prepare nutritious and appealing meals to residents
• Ability to follow kitchen procedures and protocols
• Proficient written and oral communication skills
• Excellent organizational ability, time management and interpersonal skills
• Team focused and ability to work effectively with others as part of a team
• Desire or interest in working and supporting our senior residents

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CREDENTIALS

• High school diploma or GED required. In Lieu of GED, must have at least 4 years of relevant industry cooking/kitchen experience.
• 6-month experience as a Kitchen Assistant or Dishwasher role.
• Proven cooking experience in a commercial kitchen(s) serving twenty persons or more.
• Active food handler's certification from the City of New York.

PHYSCIAL REQUIREMENTS

This role may have physical demands including, but not limited to, lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing. This role may also require uniforms and/or usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to climb stairs and lift at least 25lbs and stand for extended periods of time.
