Job summary

The Westminster Schools seeks a Middle School Permanent Substitute Teacher and Athletics Coach to support both the academic program and Westminster Athletics throughout the year. Responsibilities

  • Provides substitute instruction, implements lesson plans, maintains classroom continuity, and supervises Middle School students during the absence of the regular classroom teacher.
  • Coordinates daily substitute coverage and related communication in collaboration with the Middle School Registrar, Permanent Sub Coordinator, and appropriate Middle School administrators.
  • Provides supervision and support for Middle School students during designated academic, transition, lunch, activity, morning study hall, and community periods.
  • Communicates professionally and effectively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators regarding substitute coverage and student needs.
  • Supports strength, conditioning, and sports-performance programming for student-athletes in grades 6–12 under the direction of the High Performance staff.
  • Assists with warm‑ups, speed and agility activities, strength training, conditioning, and other approved student‑athlete development activities.
  • Maintains a safe, positive, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate training environment.
  • Assists with the setup and breakdown of sports‑performance sessions, equipment, testing technology, and related resources.
  • Assists with collection and organization of student‑athlete performance information as directed by the High Performance staff.
  • Helps maintain the organization, cleanliness, security, and readiness of the Ellis Fitness Center and related equipment.
  • Participates in appropriate communication and planning meetings with Middle School and Athletics personnel.
  • Supports designated athletic competitions, special events, and game operations as assigned — must be present for home varsity football games and support game operations.
  • Models and reinforces sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity, accountability, and respect.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Work Hours: The regular work schedule includes responsibilities before, during, and after the academic day. The Permanent Substitute must report by 7:10 in the morning. Work hours vary based on substitute teaching assignments, athletic programming, and school events. Early morning, evening, and occasional weekend responsibilities are expected.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Middle School Permanent Substitute Teacher and Athletics Coach supports both the Middle School academic program and Westminster Athletics throughout the academic year. This position is well suited for an adaptable, student-centered educator who enjoys working across multiple areas of school life and is committed to supporting students academically, physically, and personally.

Reporting to the Head of Middle School, the employee provides consistent instructional coverage across Middle School academic disciplines in the absence of classroom teachers. The position also assists with coordinating daily substitute coverage, communicates with faculty and staff about classroom needs, provides student supervision, and participates actively in the life of the Middle School.

In partnership with Westminster Athletics and the High Performance staff, the employee also supports strength, conditioning, sports performance, and student-athlete development. Athletics responsibilities may include working with students in grades 6–12 before and after the academic day, assisting with training sessions and athletic operations, and supporting designated athletic events.

Successful candidates will demonstrate flexibility, strong interpersonal and organizational skills, sound judgment, and a genuine interest in mentoring students. The employee must be able to transition effectively between academic, supervisory, and athletic responsibilities while supporting Westminster's mission and values.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements below outline the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of a successful candidate.

  • An undergraduate degree is required; a degree in education or a related field is preferred
  • Direct classroom experience is preferred
  • Prior experience working with students in an academic or athletic setting
  • Experience coaching student-athletes and supporting athletic programs is preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with students, faculty, staff, and parents
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with Middle School students while maintaining appropriate classroom management and behavioral expectations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Commitment to supporting Westminster’s mission and values, with a dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive community
  • Willingness to pursue the Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential, if required for the role, with professional development and mentorship provided by Westminster.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Certification in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions and frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day. Overnight and out‑of‑area travel may also be required, primarily for planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Driving a Westminster vehicle may be required for this position.
