Job summary

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in Washington state seeks an Avalanche Forecast & Control Technician to join the Stevens Pass area team. You will help manage snow and avalanche hazards, keeping routes open and safe for travelers and communities.

You’ll work with seasoned avalanche professionals, gain hands-on experience in mountaineering and remote assessments, and support decision-making in challenging winter conditions.

Qualifications

  • Foundational knowledge of snow science and avalanche phenomena and safety.
  • Degree progress or completion in Snow Science or related field, or A3 certification.
  • Ability to apply knowledge to forecasting and hazard management.

Responsibilities

  • Observe weather, snow, and avalanche conditions daily and intervally.
  • Combine field observations for risk assessment and communication.
  • Conduct evaluations in alpine terrain for test methods.
  • Record weather data and maintain snow data in a database.
  • Assist with explosive applications for controlled releases as needed.
