Overview
Under general supervision, sets up and operates a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts, instruments, and repairs as part of the manual machining process. This includes fabrication, modification, or repair of mechanical instruments, machine parts, or industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures. Heavy industrial machine experience is highly desired.
Essential Functions
- General Machining Functions
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using mathematical knowledge and instruments such as micrometers and veneer calipers.
- Align and secure fixtures, cutting tools, machines, and materials.
- Monitor machine feed and speed during operation.
- Machine parts to specifications using manual tools like lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
- Inspect and test completed units for defects and conformance to specifications.
- Set controls to regulate the machining process.
- Perform preventive maintenance following guidelines.
- Read and interpret technical layouts, blueprints, and manuals.
- Make hand drawings as needed.
- Bore, key, and drill set screw holes on gears, hubs, and fans.
- Machine imperial and metric threads, internal and external.
- Machine and fit tapered shafts and hubs.
- Write and edit simple G-code/M-code programs for retrofitted machines.
- Motor Shop Machining Functions
- Bore and sleeve end brackets.
- Flame spray bearing journals or sleeve bearing journals.
- Apply Belzona/epoxy surface coatings on shafts and finish machining.
- Skim cut equipment frame mounting surfaces.
- Modify equipment frames for upgrades such as bearing temperature sensors and seals.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- High safety awareness for self and team.
- Experience with manual, heavy industrial lathes, boring mills, and machining of rotating equipment.
- Strong mechanical knowledge and/or experience.
- Effective teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in manual machining with minimal supervision.
- CNC experience is a plus.
- Ability to work independently, exercise initiative, and manage time efficiently.
- Problem-solving skills and high accuracy work ethic.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform maintenance on shop equipment.
- Select tools and materials for machinery work.
- Troubleshoot and repair machinery.
- Write and maintain SOPs.
- Complete maintenance logs.
- Communicate across shifts.
- Maintain and secure tools and work area.
- Follow safety protocols including lockout procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Pass drug test and background check.
- Minimum 5 years of experience required.
- Wages DOE.
