Job summary

People's Credit Union in Rhode Island seeks an experienced outside mortgage originator to source and originate residential real estate loans. The role focuses on non-member volume and delivering exceptional service to clients and staff.

You will develop leads through networking with realtors and organizations, interview borrowers, and assemble compliant loan packages while maintaining timely communication and adhering to policies and regulations including SAFE Act and NMLS.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years in an outside sales, mortgage origination role.
  • Strong knowledge of residential real estate and construction loans.
  • Highly organized with the ability to work independently.
  • Excellent relationship-building and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Encompass mortgage LOS preferred.
  • Willingness to travel to meet clients as needed.

Job description

Position Summary

This outside sales position is responsible for sourcing and originating residential real estate mortgage loans from Credit Union members and non-members, with a particular focus on non-member volume, while providing extraordinary service to both clients and internal staff.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop mortgage origination leads through personal networking with new prospects, current and former clients, membership in trade organizations (e.g., RI and local Boards of Realtors, RI Mortgage Bankers), and relationships with realtors, settlement agents, builders, developers, etc.
  • Respond to inquiries from prospective clients regarding all types of residential mortgage and construction loans. Conduct the loan interview, present financing options, and secure the information necessary to initiate a loan application.
  • Prepare complete and accurate loan packages that conform to product eligibility requirements and provide all documentation required by Credit Union policy, procedures, underwriting guidelines, and applicable government regulations including FNMA, FHLMC, and any other applicable investor guidelines.
  • Proactively maintain effective and timely communication with clients and internal staff regarding application requests, loan status, loan approvals/denials, and any other concerns.
  • Ensure that Mortgage Advisor Client Service Standards are met in the performance of this role.
  • Adhere to and demonstrate the behaviors of the Credit Union’s core values – Genuine, Resourceful, Earnest, Empathetic, Trustworthy, and actively work to enhance the member experience.
  • Perform all duties in line with all Credit Union policies and state and federal regulations.
National Mortgage Licensing System (NMLS) Registration
  • Apply for and successfully maintain NMLS registration.
  • Complete all assigned trainings per regulations set forth by SAFE Act.
  • Complete annual registration renewal process.

Physical Requirements:

  • Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and regularly lifting up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be able to operate routine office equipment.
  • Must be able to routinely perform work on a computer for an average of 6–8 hours per day.
  • Must be able to work additional hours whenever required or requested by management.
  • Must be capable of reliably working a regular schedule and timely response to client and staff needs.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to routinely perform work indoors at Credit Union locations in a climate‑controlled, shared work area with moderate noise.
  • Must be able to work/meet with clients away from Credit Union locations – i.e., public or client‑designated locations (within reason), and maintain adequate transportation.
